  • The logo is copied from here. The uploader made no fair-use claim, and the uploader's claim that the logo is in the public domain because it appeared on a press release is contradicted by WP:FAQ/Copyright ("[P]ress releases are handled like other copyrighted content."). —  Rebbing  talk  05:05, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm sorry but I haven't taken the logo from here. In fact, the logo is available to use freely from their own site. Just go here and under the "About Us" section, check the last paragraph which mentions the same and allows free use of their logo and its other variants. So, I hope that its totally fine to use it. Getcharstar (talk) 05:27, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response, Star: I hadn't seen that license. However, it isn't sufficient (and it certainly does not make the logo public domain) because the it states that "you are free to use [the logos] anywhere as long as you aren’t making money off it" (emphasis added), which, per WP:NONFREE, is not "free content" and cannot be used on Wikipedia absent justification as described in that policy.
Fortunately, per WP:LOGO, it appears it's okay to use it in the infobox no matter the license. (I added an appropriate rationale to the file description page to this effect.) Had I known that, I wouldn't have listed the image here. Sorry for the hassle. —  Rebbing  talk  08:10, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note: This image is currently tagged as non-free. If there is a dispute with the rationale, please tag the image with {{dfu}} or list it at WP:FFD. AnomieBOT 09:06, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • So can the notice be now removed since its used only in Infobox? Thank you. Getcharstar (talk) 14:28, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing. —  Rebbing  talk  15:38, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Appears to be a high-res press photo. This is the uploader's (a new account) only file. A very crude tineye query yields a couple of results (there are probably more) FASTILY 11:12, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • This flag does not look like a PD-textlogo case to me; the gun depicted does look like it could be creative enough. Not sure what that black contour in the image centre is either. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 18:29, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • The license does not give proper information about the copyright status. This image is copyrighted to the Wheeler and Woolsey act unless
  • The publicity photo was published without copyright notice (likely, but not asserted by the uploader) or
  • The copyright holder has released the rights. The uploader gives the impression that he uploaded with permission but says nothing of a copyright release. Magog the Ogre (tc) 19:09, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • This looks like a promo shot, so it was probably published shortly after it was taken. There is not enough information to determine if this was without notice or renewal, though. --Stefan2 (talk) 19:35, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The image contains material from NASA Visible Earth (formerly "Blue Marble"), which is freely available for re-publication or re-use, including commercial purposes, except for where copyright is indicated. No copyright is indicated for the source material. ♆ CUSH ♆

  • How can it be verified that the information comes from NASA? --Stefan2 (talk) 23:40, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There was no other provider of freely downloadable imagery of earth's surface in 2008 and earlier, to my knowledge. The overlaid map features are my own. Also, I heavily edited the original NASA imagery to remove modern features (e.g. Lake Nasser) and recreate ancient features (e.g. Persian Gulf, Iranian Lakes, vegetation) ♆ CUSH ♆ 23:50, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The image doesn't seem to come from the linked page. There is also no way to verify that there was no other provider of freely downloadable imagery in 2008, or even that the picture comes from freely downloadable imagery in the first place. --Stefan2 (talk) 00:49, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The used satellite imagery comes from the land_shallow_topo_east.tif file that was available at the predecessor of the linked page as well as from the world.200407.3x21600x21600.C1.png file that is now available at JULY, BLUE MARBLE NEXT GENERATION. NASA has since redesigned its websites, but the content is largely the same. The resulting images are composites of the satellite imagery, with added overlaid features like coastlines and city locations, edited with various Adobe products as well as my own software. What verification do you seek? I will not grant you access to my hard-drives. ♆ CUSH ♆ 01:03, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
So, what now? ♆ CUSH ♆ 12:16, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It would be of greatest help if you were to apply this information to the file template at Commons, at present it implies 100% own work, which is likely to get it deleted. If you're 100% sure it's Nasa World Wind, there are approval templates for that, merely search it in Commons search field to find other files of same type. Cheers! Looking at this image from NASA, it is pretty clear that that image is derivative (same colouration, same perspective). —  crh 23  (Talk) 14:54, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
