WP:TRANSLATION requirements for attribution[edit]

Hi Mike,

Wanted to check with you as I am doing some work to remove static links to foreign language wikipedia pages from articles (e.g., adding interlanguage links, linking pages in WikiData, etc.). One of the types of changes I am making is to remove in-page attributions for translations.

This is based on my understanding of Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia#Translating_from_other_language_Wikimedia_projects and Help:Translation, which state that the attribution link should only be mentioned in the edit history / edit summary, and is not necessary in the page itself.

I see you reverted an edit I made on Jardin des Plantes, Toulouse (diff:[6]), and I wanted to check if there was something I should be aware of when making these changes (for example, if before a certain date there were different attribution rules on wikipedia content which require a translation attribution to be placed within the page), or if I was mistaken in making these changes.

Thanks, Shazback (talk) 22:28, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Shazback: Thanks for the message. I think we've historically been inconsistent with how we've approached this, but back in 2008 this was one of the established way to provide the attribution, which is why I included it when I started the article [7]. Edit histories are not very visible pages, so only providing attribution there doesn't seem sufficient to me. Possibly a good way forward is to convert to {{Translated page}}. I would encourage you to seek wider input about this before making mass edits removing the information - Wikipedia:Teahouse, Help talk:Translation, Wikipedia talk:Copying within Wikipedia might be good venues to ask this.
