The action of the film takes place ten years after the end of "The Phantom Menace," Episode I of the Star Wars saga. In the recurring initial text with which the episodes of the saga begin, it is established that thousands of Republic star systems, influenced and directed by Count Dooku, intend to abandon it. Padmé Amidala (former Queen of Naboo) returns to the Republic Senate (located on the planet Coruscant), this time as a senator, to vote against creating a Republic army to help the overwhelmed Jedi in their task of maintaining peace and order in the galaxy.
After a bounty hunter attempts a deadly attack on Senator Padmé Amidala on the airstrip on Coruscant where her bodyguard and decoy, Corde, is unfortunately killed, the Jedi Council tasks Padawan Anakin Skywalker and his master Obi- Wan Kenobi the mission to protect the senator from another possible attack. As Obi-Wan and Anakin keep watch outside the senator's apartment, the same bounty hunter again attempts another attack, planting poisonous parasitic insects in her room while he slept. But Anakin and Obi-Wan quickly become aware of her presence and manage to save her before the parasitic insects attack her, decapitating them with her lightsaber. Anakin then discovers the probe droid that brought the poisonous parasites and Obi-Wan wastes no time jumping out the window and grabbing the probe droid, which tries to escape the scene. When the probe approaches where the bounty hunter named Zam Wesell is, she discovers that Obi-Wan is holding on to the probe and is forced to destroy it in order to get rid of the Jedi master and quickly escapes from the place in her ship. However, Obi-Wan is rescued by Anakin and they both start a chase through the skies of the city, until they reach a bar in the city where she tries to mislead both Jedi, but they manage to capture her. The young Padawan and her master question her outside the bar and try to find out the identity of the person she hired the bounty hunter. Surprisingly however, another bounty hunter shoots a toxic dart into her neck, killing her before she could reveal everything to both Jedi.
Hours later, the Jedi Council recommends that for safety, Anakin be in charge of escorting Padmé from the planet Coruscant to the planet Naboo, the senator's home world, and protect her from any danger until the situation is resolved, while that Obi-Wan on the other hand is entrusted with the task of locating and capturing the bounty hunter. Arriving on Naboo, Anakin reveals to Padmé his feelings for her and at the same time learns that he is reciprocated. But both decide to suppress their feelings, because Jedi are not allowed to fall in love. During his stay on Naboo, Anakin has multiple nightmares in which he sees his mother, Shmi Skywalker, suffer and together with Padmé, decides to travel to the planet Tatooine to find out what is happening. Once there they meet with Anakin's old owner in his slave years, Watto who is surprised to see Anakin again after so many years and also that he himself has grown and now has become a Jedi. Just when Anakin asks where his mother is, Watto reveals that Shimi no longer belongs to him, since he sold her a few years ago and that he heard that the person he sold her to freed her and they got married, at which Anakin questions Watto does know where his mother is now and Watto for his part agrees to help them and they decide to search the sales records. After meeting with Watto previously, Anakin and Padmé finally meet Shmi's new family, the Lars, who sorrowfully tell Anakin how his mother had been kidnapped over a month ago by the Tuskens, the Tusken Raiders.. Given this scenario, Anakin decides to go alone in search of him and finds his mother prisoner in a Tusken camp; However, after a few words, Shmi dies in her arms after seeing her son grown from her. Faced with this terrible loss, a furious and revenge-seeking Anakin quickly ruthlessly and mercilessly murders the entire Tusken tribe, leaving no survivors. Moments later, Anakin carries her deceased mother's body back to the Lars' farm, where they later hold a small funeral for her and bury her in the farm's sands.
Meanwhile, Obi-Wan's investigations eventually lead him to the planet Kamino, where he discovers that the Kaminoans are preparing a clone army to serve the Republic on behalf of a Jedi Master named Syfo Dyas, who had been assassinated. about ten years ago. Also, there he meets a Mandalorian bounty hunter named Jango Fett, whose DNA the Kaminoans are using to create clones. They also mention that in addition to the payment agreed with the bounty hunter, Jango also requested one more thing: an unaltered clone just for him, a genetically pure replica that has no structural changes to its genetics and no growth spurt, which Jango would breed as his own. own son and whom he decided to name as Boba Fett. Obi-Wan later meets Fett on Kamino and believes that he is the bounty hunter he has been looking for. Obi-Wan asks if he met Master Syfo Dyas and where he hired him, but Jango reveals that he never met him and that the person who actually hired him was a man named Tyranus on one of Bogden's moons.. Just when Jango thinks he's been found out, he asks Boba to pack up all of his things so he can quickly escape from Kamino. After seeing the clone army and meeting Jango Fett at the facility, Obi-Wan decides to inform the Jedi Council what he discovered and if they ever approved the creation of a clone army, but the Jedi Council confess to Obi -Wan, that these at no time gave any approval for its creation and ask Obi-Wan to arrest Jango Fett immediately and bring him to the Jedi Temple for questioning. However, when Obi-Wan is about to arrest him, he was already about to leave and the two start a small fight, from which Jango manages to escape, fleeing in his ship with Boba. However, Obi-Wan had planted a tracker in the hull of Jango's ship, Slave I, and follows it to the planet Geonosis, where he discovers that the Separatist leaders, under the command of Count Dooku, are located there. Disciple of the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious. He also discovers that Viceroy Nute Gunray is the mastermind behind the failed attempts on Senator Padmé Amidala, in retribution for the events of The Phantom Menace. Already aware of what is happening, Obi-Wan tries to send a message to the Jedi Council to inform them of the current situation, but due to a failure in his long-range transmitter, it is sent to Anakin who is a little further away. on the planet Tatooine, for his young Padawan to relay to the Jedi Council. However, while he was recording the message, Obi-Wan is discovered and captured by battle droids patrolling the area.
Meanwhile on Tatooine, Anakin and Padme via the droid R2-D2 are informed of the message sent by Obi-Wan and relay it to the Jedi Council. After being aware of the events, Master Yoda admits that what is happening on the planet Geonosis is much worse than they imagined, so they decide to take action on the matter. For his part, Master Windu informs Anakin that the Jedi Order will be in charge of rescuing Obi-Wan and that for now, the most important thing is that both Anakin and Padme remain on Tatooine until further notice and that they protect the senator from any danger. After the meeting, Padmé mentions to Anakin that the Jedi Order will not arrive in time to rescue Obi-Wan, since they will have to travel half the galaxy to reach the planet Geonosis and this suggests going personally to this planet, since according to the coordinates from the ship, said planet is closer to them and they decide to go to rescue it despite the orders of the Jedi Council.
Meanwhile, Count Dooku questions Obi-Wan about his appearance on the planet and confesses to the latter that the Galactic Senate is being controlled by the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Sidious, but Obi-Wan doesn't believe it. in the veracity of the Count's words. On the other hand, Padme and Anakin arrive at the planet Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan, but they also end up being captured by the guards and by Jango Fett himself. Later the three are taken to the arena of Geonosis, to be executed by three different creatures under the control of the Geonosians. However, they manage to free themselves and try to repel the sand creatures, until a large number of Jedi masters arrive at the Geonosis arena to rescue them. During the confrontation, Jango enters the fight against the Jedi killing one, but when he goes down to the arena to confront Jedi Master Mace Windu, the latter manages to decapitate him with a single swing of his lightsaber. However, most of the Jedi are neutralized by the droid army of the Separatists and when all seemed lost, Master Yoda appears with thousands of clone troopers brought from Kamino and they drive them all out of the Geonosis arena. Just as everyone has left, Jango's helmet moments later is picked up by a shocked orphan, Boba Fett.
As they exit the arena, the Battle of Geonosis quickly breaks out, the first fought between the Republic and the Separatists, which would mark the start of the Clone Wars. In the heat of battle, the Separatist leaders decide to escape the planet, while Count Dooku escapes the base with plans for a supreme weapon that the Geonosians were designing to take them with their master to Coruscant, being pursued by Anakin and Obi. -Wan. Dooku easily defeats Obi-Wan and Anakin, cutting off his right forearm and leaving them dying on the ground. However, before he can finish them off, Master Yoda comes to his aid and begins a duel with Dooku, who ends up distracting Yoda on purpose, so that Yoda leaves Dooku for the moment and focuses on saving Obi. wan and Anakin from being crushed by a gigantic metal pipe, while Dooku in the middle of it all escapes the planet.
Later, Dooku meets in an industrial district of Coruscant with his master Darth Sidious and confesses that everything is happening as planned. Meanwhile at the Jedi Temple, Obi-Wan tells Mace Windu and Yoda about what Count Dooku revealed to him, that a Sith lord named Darth Sidious is controlling the Galactic Senate. Although they doubt the veracity of Count Dooku's words. they admit that they will keep an eye on the Senate and mention that if it weren't for the appearance of the clone troopers they would never have been victorious during the battle, but Yoda tells them that there was no such victory and that the night of the Dark Side has come, also mentioning the Imminent start of the Clone Wars. The film ends when thousands of clone trooper troops on Coruscant board their star cruisers to go to their respective battlefronts to face the war that has just begun, while on the other hand a secret wedding between Anakin, now with a mechanical arm and Padmé in the lakes of Naboo with the only witnesses being the droids R2-D2 and C3PO.
Dubbing
Much of the main cast of The Phantom Menace returned to shoot Attack of the Clones. Ewan McGregor returned to play Obi-Wan Kenobi, who became a Jedi Knight during this installment and a mentor to the young Padawan Anakin Skywalker. Natalie Portman reprized her role as Padmé Amidala, former Queen of the planet Naboo and Senator from the same planet, as well as Ian McDiarmid as Chancellor Palpatine.
Because the second installment takes place ten years after the first, Jake Lloyd, who played the young Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace, was unable to continue in the role. The audition team conducted an extensive search across the United States to find the actor who would play the adult Skywalker, and after six months, Hayden Christensen was chosen from over 400 applicants. Lucas auditioned various actors, mostly unknown, before Christensen was elected. Among the many who auditioned were Ryan Phillippe, who was turned down for being too old for the part, Colin Hanks, son of fellow actor Tom Hanks and who was turned down for his "lack of chemistry" with Natalie Portman, and Jonathan Brandis. Leonardo DiCaprio also met Lucas for the role; However, his publicist, Ken Sunshine, confirmed that the actor was already busy, since during the filming of Attack of the Clones he planned to film the movie Gangs of New York , by Martin Scorsese.
Samuel L. Jackson reprized his role as Mace Windu, a Jedi Master member of the Jedi Council. Frank Oz again provided the voice of Master Yoda, a character who for the first time in the series was rendered using digital effects instead of using puppets. Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker gave life to the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 respectively; the protocol droid created by Skywalker became in charge of the Lars family after their departure from the planet Tatooine, while the astrodroid became part of Senator Amidala's service. Ahmed Best reprized his role as Jar Jar Binks, a Gungan elected representative of Naboo by his senator.
Among the new actors joining the cast were Christopher Lee, who played a former Jedi who calls himself Count Dooku and who serves as one of the leaders of the Separatist Movement; Temuera Morrison as bounty hunter Jango Fett and clone troopers, the latter created by the Kaminoans with the former's DNA to raise an army for the Republic. Daniel Logan played Boba Fett, an unaltered clone that Jango Fett treats like a son and who already appeared as an adult in the original trilogy of the saga.
Before shooting began on the film, it was rumored that Catherine Zeta-Jones would be cast as a Sith and Ralph Fiennes as the young Moff Tarkin. E! Online reported that George Lucas had allowed the band 'N Sync to record a small cameo in the film in order to satisfy his daughters. However, during post-production, this scene was omitted.
In the end credits, actor Alan Ruscoe is mistakenly listed as Neimoidian Senator Lott Dod, when said character was portrayed by the uncredited David Healey and voiced by Christopher Truswell.
Shooting
Since their first collaborations on the television series The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, George Lucas has been interested in digital photography. Moved by the director's interest, in 1996, producer Rick McCallum convinced Sony to develop a 24-frame-per-second high-definition digital camera. There was some digital testing on The Phantom Menace, but the technology wasn't quite ready. The final camera version reached McCallum's hands just a week before Attack of the Clones was set to begin shooting.
Filming began on June 26, 2000, at 20th Century Fox Studios in Australia. After two and a half months there, filming began on location, starting at the Royal Palace of Caserta, Italy, where the Naboo palace scenes of The Phantom Menace had previously been shot. The gardens of Lake Como (also in Italy) were another of the landscapes used for the representation of Naboo. Immediately afterwards, the team moved to the Tunisian desert, where the scenes on the planet Tatooine were filmed, just like in the previous films in the saga. The scene at the Lars family farm in Revenge of the Sith, when Obi-Wan hands baby Luke over to Owen and Beru Lars, was shot at the same time as the scenes in The clones attack in this very place. Later, the city of Seville, in Spain, and more specifically the Plaza de España, served as a landscape for the city of Theed, capital of Naboo.
The use of the new digital cameras saved time during the production of the film, because it did not have to be developed like celluloid and allowed scenes to be edited and modified quickly, since the shots did not have to be scanned to modify them to computer and then re-scan them onto film.
Production
During the first few months of production and still without a copy of the script, production designers Gavin Bocquet and Doug Chiang began drawing the first sketches of the two new planets featured in Attack of the Clones. During pre-production, George Lucas described the planet Geonosis as a rocky, insect world. The designers based the planet's geography on the large termite mounds that can be found on the African continent, blending it with Gothic and Art Nouveau architecture. The appearance of the Geonosians was made from a mixture between termites and the first sketches of the Neimoidians that were designed for The Phantom Menace. On the other hand, the planet Kamino, known during production as The "water planet" or "storm planet" was designed as a contrast to Geonosis, with a neat and elegant appearance, just like its inhabitants, the Kaminoans, based on the classic aliens with long necks and almond-shaped eyes., but the designers added some baby seal traits to give them a more innocent look. The plans of the exterior of Kamino were made from a model, to which the rough sea was added to the computer.
Clone troopers were mostly added to PC. With the design of his armor, we wanted to mark the evolution that it would undergo until it became the one worn by the imperial soldiers in the original trilogy. Because there was speculation for a time about the similarity between the armor of the bounty hunter Boba Fett (who was also one of the clones created on Kamino) and that of the Imperial troopers, designer Doug Chiang created the armor of the clones as a mix. of the two mentioned. In Revenge of the Sith, the evolution of the armor would be made more visible by introducing different colors into it, just as they appear in those of the Imperial soldiers in the original trilogy.
Along with the clone troopers numerous new vehicles were introduced, such as the LAATs, called during production the "jedi attack helicopter", which were designed under the influence of the Russian Mil Mi-24 helicopters, or the AT-TE tanks, added to the computer during the last moments of post-production and which were designed by Ryan Church as predecessors of the future Imperial AT-ATs (notable in their similar appearance). The Jedi fighter, which also appears For the first time in this film in the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi, it is reminiscent of the Imperial destructures for its triangular shape.
Gavin Boquet was in charge of building the sets. In total, 68 sets were made, among which the Coruscant nightclub, the reproduction of the Lars family kitchen as it was already seen in A New Hope, and the Jedi Council chamber stand out.. The latter was remodeled several times to create other new sets related to the Jedi, such as Yoda's office or the room where he teaches the Padawan.
Stunt coordinator Nick Gillard, who had previously developed the Jedi fighting style for The Phantom Menace, created a different style for each Jedi in this film, mixing swashbuckling techniques with martial arts. Gillard himself conducted several interviews at different fighting schools to choose the extras that would play Jedis. At his own request, Samuel L. Jackson's character, Jedi Master Mace Windu, who is seen fighting for the first time in this film, he received a lightsaber whose blade is purple, as opposed to the traditional blue or green colors for the 'good guys'. and red for the "bad guys".
Soundtrack
The film's soundtrack was released on April 23, 2002 by Sony Classical. The music was composed and conducted by John Williams and performed by the London Voices and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Four different covers of the soundtrack have been distributed: one featuring the Yoda character, one featuring Anakin and Padmé, one featuring Jango Fett, and one featuring the final poster used for the film.
Novel
The novel based on the film was written by R.A. Salvatore and was published on April 23, 2002 by Del Rey publishing house. Includes exclusive events, created by the author.
In the prologue, Anakin, while flying to the planet Ansion with Obi-Wan, has a nightmare in which his mother, Shmi Skywalker, turns to glass and shatters. The following pages refer to the events leading up to Shmi's capture by the Tusken Raiders and how Cliegg Lars lost her leg while trying to rescue her from her. It also offers a more detailed look than the film into Shmi's life at the moisture farm and her relationships with the Lars family and C-3PO. Interspersed with these events are also scenes of Senator Amidala before she leaves for Coruscant to vote on creating an army for the Republic. Padmé discusses with her sister the possibility of retiring from politics to start a family and then she receives the reports about the disturbances between the spice miners of the Naboo moons that she refers to in the film.
The novel also delves further into both Jango and Boba Fett's father-son relationship, as well as Padmé and Anakin's.
Premiere
The teaser trailer of the film, two and a half minutes long, was released on March 10, 2002 on the Fox television network, during the commercial broadcast between the series Malcolm in the middle and The X-Files. Five days later, this same trailer began airing on the big screen during the commercials for the movie Ice Age.
The world premiere of Attack of the Clones took place on May 16, 2002, receiving a PG (Parental Guidance Suggested) rating for the Motion Picture Association of America, the U.S. association responsible for age-rating films. Before the film was released, there were a number of controversies regarding piracy. A week before the premiere, a pirated copy of the film appeared on the Internet, allegedly made during a private showing and thanks to a digital video camera recording the screen on which it was being broadcast. Analysts predicted that up to a million people viewed this copy of the film before it was released in theaters. In addition, authorities seized thousands of pirated DVD and VCD copies of Attack of the Clones in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, before the film was released. Again in Malaysia, but this time in Singapore, customs officers arrested a week after the world premiere, on May 23, a couple who it had just received 9,000 bootleg copies of the film, which had been smuggled into the country.
Reception
Fundraising
The film grossed a total of 649,398,328 dollars around the world (310,676,740 in the United States and 338,721,588 in the rest of the countries) after spending 172 days in theaters, thus reaching 25th place in the ranking of highest-grossing films of all time. It currently ranks 91st on the list of highest-grossing films of all time. It was the only Star Wars film not to reach the top spot grossing films of the year in the United States, as Spider-Man and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, both enjoying more favorable reviews, were behind ahead.
Criticism
Like its predecessor, Attack of the Clones received both good and bad reviews from film critics. The Rotten Tomatoes website reports that the film has 143 positive reviews out of a total of 216, which translates into 66% "freshness" with an average score of 6.5 out of 10. For its part, the site Metacritic gave it a score of 53 out of 100, based on 39 critic reviews. Internet Movie Database (IMDb) users, with 157,672 votes, give the film an average rating of 6.8 out of 10. possible points.
Much of the negative feedback focused on aspects of the script, although most critics recognized an improvement over The Phantom Menace. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film two stars out of four possible and criticized the romance between Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker, based on the "most basic and tired romantic clichés", as well as the "flat" dialogue that continues for the first hour of the film to establish plot points and inform viewers of what has happened since the end of the first installment, thereby comparing the characters to lawyers rather than heroes Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times largely agreed with Ebert, criticizing the lack of chemistry between the leading couple and the "flat" dialogue, adding that not even actors of Ewan's caliber McGregor and Natalie Portman were able to encourage him, except for Christopher Lee and his portrayal of Count Dooku. Mick LaSalle's review of the San Francisco Chronicles followed the same direction as the previous two, although he was not as critical of the relationship between Amidala and Skywalker, highlighting the latter as "the best thing in the movie... the only one with the ability to surprise us".
Todd McCarthy of Variety magazine agreed on the aspect of the "mundane dialogues" between the couple, but added that "the exposition and sense of storytelling are clearer and more profitable." and that "some of the performances are really decent." He also highlighted the "stunning" work of production designer Gavin Bocquet, costume designer Trisha Biggar and the visual effects team, especially the digital creation of Yoda with "infinitely more mobility and expressiveness than his counterpart in Return of the Jedi". Michael Wilmington of the Chicago Tribune called Attack of the Clones the "most exciting and visually spectacular of all the films Star Wars to date". He cited the quality of the visual effects and described the film as "first-rate visual storytelling", also noting the charisma of characters like Yoda and C3PO and Ewan McGregor's nice transition with foreshadowings of Alec Guinness' Obi Wan in the trilogy. classic, and including a comparison between the cruelty of Christopher Lee's Count Dooku and James Earl Jones's Darth Vader.
A few months before the premiere of Episode III, Revenge of the Sith, actor Ewan McGregor described the lightsaber fights featured in Attack of the Clones as " unsatisfying" compared to the climactic duels of the last installment of the saga.

Allusions to the original trilogy
The trilogy that constitutes a proto-sequel to the Star Wars saga (episodes I, II and III) often alludes to the original trilogy (episodes IV, V and VI), helping to connect all the movies. George Lucas has referred to hexalogy as a long poem that he rhymes.
In Attack of the Clones there is a clear allusion to The Empire Strikes Back, since in both cases there is a chase and the hunted manages to escape in a similar way: in In this film, Obi-Wan Kenobi escapes from Jango Fett in an asteroid field by attaching his space fighter to one of the rocks in order to disappear from his enemy's sensors, while in The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo uses a similar tactic by attaching the Millennium Falcon to an Imperial destroyer.
Also featured in this film is the origin of the gigantic space station known as the Death Star. During the battle of Geonosis and considering it lost, Count Dooku keeps a hologram in which the station appears, in order to take it to his master Darth Sidious.
Obi-Wan also says that he feels Anakin will kill him, which would happen in episode 4 with Anakin in his Darth Vader identity
Sequel
On August 15, 2008, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a CGI-animated film that served as a preview of the series of the same name, which was released in the fall, was released in US theaters. of the same year on the Cartoon Network and TNT television networks. The series, which is made in the same format as the film, has half-hour episodes and both narrate the events that take place between Attack of the Clones and The Revenge of the Sith: The Clone Wars.
