Mitsuteru Yokoyama
Mitsuteru Yokoyama (横山 光輝 Yokoyama Mitsuteru, Kobe, June 18, 1935 - Tokyo, April 15, 2004) was a famous Japanese mangaka, whose creations gave place to numerous animated series. Among his works is Tetsujin 28-gō , a forerunner of the mecha genre, giant robots.
Life
Yokoyama was born in Kobe, although he spent his childhood in Tottori Prefecture with his family to evacuate from World War II. In his teens he read Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis , which made him decide to become a professional mangaka. After graduating from high school, he started working at a bank, but later quit to devote more time to creation.
In 1956 he began publishing Tetsujin 28-go, which was a great success.
Yokoyama's major works consist of large volumes: an example of this is Sangoku-shi (Romance of the Three Kingdoms), whose first edition is composed of 60 tomes. In addition to Sangoku-shi, he is the author of numerous other comics inspired by the history of China and Japan, including Suiko-den (Swamp Bandits ), Xiang Yu and Liu Bang and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Yokoyama died in a fire at his Tokyo home. He was found unconscious in bed with severe burns on Thursday April 15, 2004. He died sixteen hours later at a nearby hospital.
