First Season

Marissa is a rich 16-year-old girl from Newport Beach, California, where her family undergoes dramatic changes, including her parents separating, her mother's wedding, and her father leaving. At the beginning of the series, a boy named Ryan Atwood arrives with whom she little by little begins to fall in love. Marissa's father, Jimmy Cooper, is arrested for fraud, and declares bankruptcy, though he later regains his job. Later, she discovers that her boyfriend, Luke Ward, has been cheating on her with another during the trip to Tijuana, Mexico with Summer Roberts, Ryan Atwood, and Seth Cohen, where Marissa, due to everything that happened, mixes tequila with sleeping pills and loses consciousness. and being near death about to die Ryan finds her and saves her. Marissa, bewildered after losing the person she loves, begins a relationship with someone of the same sex as her, Alex, a relationship that ends up failing because Ryan, whom she always loved, pays attention to her again and they return to be engaged. Trey, Ryan's brother tries to rape her when he was high, Ryan, after a long time, finds out, loses his papers and tries to kill him. Marissa discovers them fighting, Trey beats Ryan and when he was preparing to kill him she takes Trey's gun, which was on the ground, and shoots him in the back.

Third Season

Marissa is expelled from Harbor College and has to transfer to a public school where she meets Johnny, who dies midway through the season.

Marissa stays with Ryan for a long time until the problems that overwhelm her due to the death of Johnny and her emotional problems end their relationship forever, although both continue to love each other. After this Marissa establishes a stronger relationship with Volchok, who is a drug addict and low life boy. Ryan accepts this and tells Volchok to take care of Marissa.
