Zhou Wei Hui
Zhou Wei Hui(周卫慧, in pinyin Zhōu Wèi Hùi)(Ningbo, 1973), known in the West as Wei Hui, is a Chinese writer.
Biography
As a child she traveled a lot because her father was a high-ranking military officer. She finished her studies in Chinese philology in 1995 at Fudan University after a year of military training.
Career
Wei Hui published her first short story and four books at the age of 21 before dedicating herself to her first full-length novel, Shanghai Baby (上海宝贝) (2000), which It sold more than 80,000 copies in two weeks until the Chinese authorities banned it for decadent, vicious and a slave to foreign culture. Even so, the pirated copies of the novel They made her the most read author in China. The semi-autobiographical work tells the story of Coco, a young Chinese aspiring writer. It has been published in 45 countries and translated into 34 languages. The film of the same name, scripted by the author, was directed by German director and producer Berengar Pfahl and starred Chinese actress Bai Ling.
Marrying Buddha, Married Buddha (我的禅) (2005), is the sequel to Shanghai Baby i> and narrates Coco's adventures in New York; has been censored, modified and published under another title in China.
At the beginning of 2007, Wei accidentally injured his spine and remained in a coma for a month. Just a few weeks after waking up, the novel Dog Dad (狗爸爸) (2007) was published in China, which in the author's own words has nothing to do with sex, unlike the two books mentioned above. The story tells how a girl from Shanghai decides to return in search of her old love. Wei, the girl in question, rejects the marriage proposal of her boyfriend Zhe, who then leaves her. Wei decides to get the couple's dog, Lu Fengchan, to bring Zhe back. A novel that talks about kindness, courage and faith, as well as the ability to forgive. And having great faith along with the ability to forgive is not easy, says the author herself. She also makes known her disagreement with the international title that her publisher chose in the first edition, showing herself in favor of Doggy Dog, since the only reason why the novel is called that is because a talking dog appears in it.
Wei Hui is often associated with Mian Mian, another member of the so-called New Generation.
