A zettabyte is an information storage unit whose symbol is the ZB, equals 1021 bytes.

The prefix was adopted in 1991, it comes from the Latin "septem", which means seven.

Equivalences (in decimal system):

1 Terabyte (TB) = 1000 Gigabytes (GB).
1 Petabyte (PB) = 1000 Terabytes.
1 Exabyte (EB) = 1000 Petabytes.
1 Zettabyte (ZB) = 1000 Exabytes = 1 million petabytes = 1000 million terabytes.

Examples

  • The approximate weight of the entire internet in 2015 was 8 zettabytes. The approximate weight in 2018 easily exceeded 10 zettabyte, by 2020 it is estimated that this amount can be doubled.[chuckles]required]
  • As to the total volume of data produced in the world, the ZB was overwhelmed in 2012. In 2015 there were 15.5 ZB, in 2020 50.5 ZB were estimated and by the end of 2025 it is expected that 175 ZB will occur.
  • In science, it was estimated in 2015 that by 2025 astronomy will be producing 25 ZB of observational data, while the genomics will sequester 1 ZB of pb.
