Zambia's population comprises more than 70 Bantu-speaking ethnic groups. Some of these groups are small, and only 2 of them are made up of enough people to make up at least 10% of the population. Most inhabitants practice a subsistence economy, growing their own food. However, the country is quite urbanized, since 42% of the population resides in cities. The predominant religion is a mixture of traditional beliefs and Christianity

Demography of Zambia, FAO Information, 2005; Number of inhabitants in thousands.

Most British and South Africans live in Lusaka and the Copperbelt province of northern Zambia, where they are employed in mines or work in related activities. Zambia also has a small but influential Asian minority brought from India concentrated in the capital that has been reduced in 2019 to 12,300 members due to emigration.

This may result in lower life expectancy, higher infant mortality and mortality rates, lower population and lower population growth rates, and changes in population distribution by age and sex other than expected.
