Etymology
The disposition of the hamlet on a small conical hill is notorious, at whose vertex is found, already in ruins, the so-called house of the Vinculeros. The place name will allude to this fact. It is a double diminutive of the voice top < The t. CȲMA. Regularly *CȲMĀCŬLU- > cimayo, cimao; Castilian form cimajo. The place of Los Cimayos (Muga de Sayago) can be compared. The transfer of the accent caused by the second suffication in -ón (diminutive pejorative value: 'little mound') frees the protonic vowel allowing the assimilation process *Cimayón > Zamayon. The name of the Soriano Zamajón town will have the same origin. In the neighboring meadow of Zamocino, the addition of a new differentiating diminutive suffix can be seen. The hypothesis put forward by Llorente, according to which the place name could come from a pre-Indo-European root *sam-, alluding to humid soils and rich in vegetation, is weakened. in light of ancient documentation.
History
The reconquest of Zamayón was carried out by the kings of León once Ledesma, Juzbado, Guadramiro or Salamanca were reconquered by Ramiro II of León in the X. Later, in 1136 Zamayón was granted by King Alfonso VII of León to the bishopric of Salamanca. Later, Zamayón was part of the command of the Order of San Juan together with Casasola, La Izcalina, Juzbado and Valdelosa. With the creation of the current provinces in 1833, Zamayón was framed in the province of Salamanca, within the Leonese Region.
