Koenma reveals that Yusuke is now a spirit detective, and must use his unique abilities to battle demons and other threats to protect the human world. In addition, he gives Yusuke a mission to recover three artifacts stolen by three thieves from the spirit world: Hiei, Kurama and Goki. Yusuke manages to recover the objects, thanks to his newly acquired technique, the 'Rei Gun', an aura bullet coming out of his index finger. Yusuke enters a martial arts tournament on Koenma's orders. Genkai, an old martial arts master, organized this tournament to find a successor to her techniques. Together with Kuwabara, Yusuke faces the other candidates, and in the final round he meets Rando, a demon who steals the techniques of martial arts masters and then kills them. Yusuke manages to defeat Rando and becomes a student of Genkai, training for several months and gaining greater mastery of his aura. After returning, Yusuke along with Kuwabara head to the Demon World (魔界, Makai?, lit. "Demon world"), a place inhabited only by demons, where along with Kurama and Hiei they manage to defeat the four sacred beasts, a quartet of demons who try to blackmail Koenma into removing the barrier that keeps them out of the human world.

On their next mission, Yusuke, along with Kuwabara, must rescue Yukina, a Kōrime (maiden capable of wielding ice) kidnapped by a man named Tarukane deep in the mountains. She reveals that she is Hiei's sister. Yusuke and Kuwabara meet Toguro, a human turned demon, who after an apparent defeat by Yusuke, meets him again and, in order to test his potential, forces him to participate in the Dark Tournament (暗黒武術会, Ankoku Bujutsukai?, "Dark Martial Arts Association& #34;), an event organized by rich and corrupt humans, in which teams of demons, and occasionally humans, fight fierce battles and are given the chance to receive whatever they want. Team Urameshi, consisting of Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei, and Genkai (disguised in a mask) go through the arduous rounds of the tournament to reach the finals and face Team Toguro, winning the tournament. After the defeat, it is revealed that the owner of the Toguro team, Sakyo, was attempting to win in order to create a large hole from the Human World to the Demon World and allow countless demons to pass through. Sakyo commits suicide, blowing up the stadium., with the participants and spectators inside, barely able to escape.

After his return to the normal world, Yusuke comes into conflict with three high school boys, Asato Kido, Mitsunari Yanagisawa, and Yu Kaito. Using his psychic abilities, Kido paralyzes Yusuke by stepping on his shadow, kidnapping him in the process. Kuwabara and Botan decide to rescue Yusuke, and meet up with Kurama and Hiei. After rescuing Yusuke, it turns out that everything was arranged by Genkai as a test, and that Kido, Yanagisawa, and Kaito were acting under his mastermind. Genkai and Koenma then explain the new threat: Shinobu Sensui, Yusuke's predecessor as a spirit detective, has recruited six other powerful beings to help him continue the work Sakyo left behind, blasting a hole into the Demon World to cause the genocide of the race. human. Yusuke and his friends challenge and defeat each of Sensui's henchmen, culminating in a final battle between the two detectives. Sensui kills Yusuke and then retreats to the newly created portal to the Demon World. Yusuke travels to the Demon World and defeats Sensui with the help of the spirit of Sensui. his ancestor who takes control of Yusuke's body to end the fight.

Upon returning to the Human World, Yusuke is stripped of his title as spirit detective when King Enma orders him captured and executed, fearing that Yusuke's demon blood might awaken and cause a rampage in the Human World. Yusuke, uneasy, after learning that the one who interrupted the fight with Sensui was his Raizen ancestor, agrees to travel to the world of Demons. Raizen, searching for a successor to his territory, is about to die of starvation, a death that would topple the delicate political balance of the three ruling powers of the Demon World. Hiei and Kurama are summoned by the other two rulers, Mukuro and Yomi respectively, for an eventual and inevitable war. Yusuke, Kurama, and Hiei train in the kingdom for a year, at which time Raizen dies and Yusuke, left alone and Knowing nothing about how to carry out a Kingdom in conflict with the rest, he proposes to hold a tournament to decide who will rule the 3 kingdoms, a proposal accepted by Mukuro and Yomi. When he wakes up, Yusuke finds out that the winner of the tournament turns out to be Enki, one of Raizen's best friends, who makes his only rule "do not disturb the Human World". Classes of Demons

Demons and apparitions are sorted in alphabetical order. Class E is the weakest of the devils, human beings somewhat stronger than ordinary ones. Instead, the S class is the most powerful. Each class is further subdivided into three categories, upper (or +), center, and lower (or -). So, for example, class A is divided into A-, A, and A+.

These classes are not used to classify humans; When the energy of a human being is measured, it is said that the energy of the characters is equivalent to a certain class of the devil.

In the hell saga many demons surpass class S, so a number system is adopted. 36,000 units are equivalent to a Class S, although as said class is the highest it includes the greatest range of energies. The strongest S-class demons whose power we know of in the series are Yomi and Mokuro (1,550,000 and 1,575,000 units respectively). Probably Hiei and Kurama belong to class S, and Yusuke with an equivalent power belonging to the range mentioned above, it should be noted that Yusuke is half human.
