Neon Genesis Evangelion

Yui died under strange circumstances in 2004, at the age of 27, during a mysterious accident in an experiment -apparently intentional by herself- in which she reached a synchronization level of 400% with the Evangelion- 01; and her soul was assimilated by the EVA, leaving her imprisoned inside it, thus she fulfilled her objective of opposing SEELE. In this way, in theory, she reaches a semi-immortal state, when her soul is fused to the body and mind of EVA-01, she reaches a state similar to a god.

The End of Evangelion

In the narrated ending of The End of Evangelion, this hybrid resultant is seen to enter a state of torpor and wander the universe with the spear of Longinus, resembling a time capsule., as testimony for eternity that the human race once existed even when everything has disappeared. It is a solitary way of life, but that was the way Yui decided: to use her life for a transcendental purpose. An interesting fact that is shown in Evangelion 2.0 is that there were no remains of her body and the tomb was just an ornament.

Rebuild of Evangelion

In Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, and unlike the TV version, Yui's last name is stated to be "Ayanami", which changes the terms in which it was known about her and Gendō's couple life, since it was known that he had taken her last name, which is usually the reverse in marriages. On this occasion, Gendō's last name is Ikari.
