Yoshito Usui (臼井 儀人, Usui Yoshito?, Shizuoka, Shizuoka Prefecture, April 21, 1958 - Shimonita, Gunma Prefecture, September 11, 2009) was a Japanese mangaka, known nationally and internationally for being the creator of the manga and anime Shin-chan. His real name was Yoshihito Usui (臼井 義人, Usui Yoshihito?).
Biography
Yoshihito Usui was born on April 21, 1958 in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture. In 1977, he graduated from Saitama High School. Soon after, he began working in a supermarket during the day, while attending design classes at night. In 1979, he went to work at an advertising company, and in 1985 he won the Manga Action magazine's debut cartoonist award, which prompted him to publish the manga Darakuya Store Monogatari .
In 1990, he published the manga Office Lady Gumi and, in September of that same year, the work that would make him internationally famous, Shin-chan. Said manga continued until his death. Two years later, a television series about Shin-chan began airing on TV Asahi, and from that year the first film about the manga was released in Japanese theaters.
Other lesser-known works by Usui include Mix Connection, Scrambled Egg, Super Mix, and Unbalance Zone.
Death
On September 11, 2009, Usui disappeared after going hiking in a mountainous area on Mount Arafune in Gunma Prefecture. Before leaving, Usui had assured his relatives that he would return that same day. However, he did not do it and he was missing for several days. His family reported him missing on September 12.
A few days later, hikers sighted a body from afar, but were unable to access the area. News of Usui's disappearance spread quickly when the hikers returned. The police found a body whose clothes matched those described by the cartoonist's family. On September 20, the body was rescued from the ravine in which it had been found and after the corresponding tests, it was confirmed that the body was Usui's. His camera was recovered and revealed that his last photo had been taken from the edge of the cliff. According to the autopsy performed, Usui probably died on or shortly after the 11th, after falling 120 meters.
His funeral was held privately on September 23.
Personal life
Usui was married with two daughters, who by the time of his death had both left the family home.
