Yeti
The Yeti or Abominable Snowman (or Jigou for Himalayan Tibetans) could be a cryptid interpreted as a giant ape related to the Bigfoot, the Yowie in Australia, the Kunk in the Andes and other similar myths present in many cultures. In the complete absence of evidence, there are only accounts that describe it as a bipedal giant ape believed to be located in the forested areas of the Himalayas, but other sources indicate that it could be a similar variety of woolly white bear. to the polar bear
Investigations
People who believe in its existence consider it a distant relative of the orangutan that inhabited this mountain range millions of years ago, and that due to the characteristics it would present, it is possibly related to the Bigfoot, the Yowie and the Kunk. However, there is no conclusive evidence of the existence of this primate. Even other research links the yeti to bears. Remains supposedly belonging to the yeti are preserved in some monasteries in Nepal, but later it has been shown to belong to a type of local goat. On the other hand, the existence of apes of such a size is very doubtful. Those who deny it, such as paleontologist Juan Luis Arsuaga, affirm that primates in general and apes in particular only live in places where there are fruits all year round, that is, in tropical areas. Furthermore, there are no large primates in the steppes, nor in the Mediterranean pine forests, nor in the coniferous forests; only small apes, as there is not enough food available.
In 2008, a Japanese research group headed by the scientist Yoshiteru Takashi, leader of the Japanese Yeti project, traveled for forty-two days through the high mountain region of Dhaulagiri IV, recording the alleged footprints of about 45 cm in length of the elusive primate. Takashi assures that he will return to Nepal and Tibet in the next few years and will not leave the project until his group obtains reliable proof of the existence of the most wanted legendary being on the planet. The yeti is also called "The Golden Monkey".
On the other hand, Reinhold Messner, the first climber to climb Mount Everest without oxygen, the first to do so alone, the first to crown the fourteen eight-thousanders, considered the best climber in the world, accustomed to living in the area, after making a sighting He dedicated a few years to his study and has written a book on the subject, identifying the being with the jemo or jemong, the Tibetan brown bear, a large, nocturnal animal that can walk on two legs, of variable color, always solitary except when looking for a partner or during breeding, being greatly feared by its great strength by the inhabitants of the area, since it has caused many deaths. Other sources indicate the same thing: it would be a bear similar to the Norwegian polar brown bear of the woolly type adapted to heights.
It must be said that in all the reports of sightings, more than one individual is never mentioned. Therefore, a very important objection is the fact that the survival of any species requires the existence of a population of a certain size, with individuals of various ages and including juvenile forms, which have never been reported, which makes it very difficult to justify a concealment of such a population for a long time, as asserted.[citation required]
Alleged yeti relics in Buddhist monasteries
Remains supposedly belonging to the yeti are preserved in some monasteries in Nepal, but have later been shown to belong to a local goat species. In the Buddhist monasteries of Khumjung, Pangboche and Namché Bazaar, in Nepal, it is said that they keep the scalps of yetis as relics, in addition to a supposedly incorrupt hand in that of Pangboche. In 1961, after a study of Khumjung's scalp, it was revealed that it belonged to another species of animal, a relative of the chamois, the Himalayan serau (Capricornis thar) and not to a primate. a stranger. The object in question is a type of hood that monks often use in ritual dances. Those of the other monasteries were similarly made. These artifacts are venerated and are considered authentic relics by the monks of the monastery, because they are old, counting more than three hundred years.[citation required]
Chuchuna
The chuchuna is the Russian version of the yeti. It would supposedly live in the eternal cold of Siberia and, like the yeti and the Bigfoot, it is said that it would be very difficult to see it. Nikolayev proposed as an explanation that the Chuchunas would be one of the last survivors of the aborigines.
Evidence against its existence
Scientists led by evolutionary biologist Charlotte Lindqvist of the State University of New York at Buffalo took a closer look at the mitochondrial DNA of the many samples of suspected Yeti remains. In all, the scientists analyzed twenty-four samples, including nine believed to be from the creature.
The results demonstrated that the Himalayan brown bear (Ursus arctos isabellinus) is one of the first branching clades within the brown bear lineage, while the Tibetan brown bears ( Ursus thibetanus laniger) diverged much later. A clade is a grouping that contains a common ancestor and all descendants, living and extinct, of that ancestor.
The estimated times of divergence of the Tibetan Plateau and Himalayan bear lineages overlap with glaciation events in the Middle and Late Pleistocene, suggesting that extant bears in the region are descendants of populations that survived in local roosts during the Pleistocene ice ages.
Of the nine Yeti samples, eight turned out to be from bears native to the area, while the other sample came from a dog. Similar studies of hair samples supposedly related to the large North American hominin, the sasquatch (Bigfoot), have revealed that those fibers came from bears, horses, dogs, and a variety of other creatures, including humans.
