Yaeyama language

Yaeyama (ヤイマムニ Yaimamuni) is a Ryukyuan language spoken by about 44,650 people on the Yaeyama Islands south of the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. It is a Ryukyuan language, related to Miyako. The new generations use Japanese as their first language.

The following dialect groups can be distinguished:

  • Ishigaki
  • Iriomote
  • Taketomi

Some pronunciations that fell out of use in modern Japanese around the 18th century, such as the P sound, which in Japanese is the H, as well as the H sound, the letter O is the u sound and the E sound is replaced by the i sound >. The following box will show some examples.
