Xiph.Org Foundation
The Xiph.Org Foundation is a non-profit organization that develops open multimedia file formats and free software. It is mainly focused on the Ogg family of formats, the most successful of which has been Vorbis, free audio formats and codecs designed to compete with the proprietary MP3 and AAC formats. Current development work focuses on Theora, a free video format and codec designed to compete with MPEG-4, RealVideo and Windows Media Video formats.
In addition to its internal development work, the Foundation has also hosted several complementary existing free projects, most of which have groups of independent developers. Some of these projects are: the Speex codec, designed for voice, and the FLAC lossless audio codec.
The Xiph.Org Foundation has criticized Microsoft and the RIAA for their lack of openness. They claim that companies like Microsoft, which hold software patents, are holding back the advancement of the Internet. They also condemn the RIAA for supporting projects as Secure Digital Music Initiative.
In 2008, the Free Software Foundation listed Xiph.Org projects as "high priority free software projects."
History
Chris Montgomery, the creator of the Ogg container format, founded the company Xiphophorus and later the Xiph.Org Foundation. The first work that became part of the Ogg projects began in 1994. The name Xiph is an abbreviation of the original name, Xiphophorus, which in turn comes from Xiphophorus hellerii, a small aquarium fish. The name "Xiphophorus company" It was used until 2002, when it was renamed Fundación Xiph.Org.
In 1999 the company Xiphophorus defined itself on its website as "a distributed group of free software programmers working to protect the foundations of multimedia content on the Internet from corporate interests.". In 2002 the Xiph.Org Foundation defined itself on its website as "a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the foundations of multimedia content on the Internet from the control of private interests 34;.
In March 2003, the Xiph.Org Foundation was recognized by the IRS as a non-profit organization (501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization), so that United States citizens can deduct donations to Xiph.Org from their taxes.
