Xandros (or more accurately Xandros Complete Linux Desktop Solution) is a currently discontinued Canadian commercial Linux distribution based on Corel Linux (which was purchased by Xandros in 2001).) and inspired by GNU/Linux Debian focused on creating a desktop solution that combines the best of open source technologies with a corporate attention to support and usability, as well as compatibility with Microsoft Windows software.

Thanks to CrossOver Office, Xandros can run a wide range of programs designed for Windows, being compatible with Internet Explorer 6, Office XP, Adobe Photoshop CS2 among other programs. On the other hand, and due to the inclusion of Samba, it is able to integrate perfectly with Windows networks.

Includes OpenOffice.org 2.xx, Firefox and various applications. Through the Xandros Networks download system, it is possible to install applications such as k3b, Gambas, Scribus, Inkscape, Synaptic, etc. from both Xandros's own repositories and Debian's. To avoid the corruption of the system and of your particular KDE, it is advisable to perform the so-called "pinning" once installed before expanding repositories to other than Xandros. Although the desktop comes in English, it is possible to convert it to Spanish by downloading the kde-i18n-es package.

The environment is very friendly for users accustomed to Windows. For example, hard drives, CD or DVD drives (C:, D:, E:, etc.) continue to be identified in the same way as in Windows, even though they can also be treated as in Linux (hda, hdb, etc.). It has a powerful File Manager from which, just by dragging the files to the burner, you can create CDs or DVDs as you like.

The installation automatically configures the hardware. As in other Linux distributions, if there is a previous Windows installation, it respects it and when starting it allows you to choose the operating system. In the Xandros Control Center (a proprietary utility) you can set a default boot to either Windows, Xandros, or something else.

With Xandros you can read and write Windows partitions with FAT, FAT32 or NTFS file systems, as well as those of Linux. It is fully compatible with networks under Windows.

In 2007 Xandros bought Scalix and in July 2008 it bought Linspire.

In June 2007, it signed a collaboration agreement with Microsoft [1]

The Asus Eee PC Subnotebook ships with a Linux distribution by Xandros.

It started as a project based on version 3.0 of the multi-award winning Corel Linux OS. Based in Ottawa, the Xandros development team includes renowned Corel Linux OS developers and architects.

Operating system editions

There are several editions: Home, Home Premium, Professional and trial (operating for 30 days in Desktop version)

Xandros Desktop Home Edition

The basic version of Xandros intended for the end user. It includes the 30-day trial versions of Crossover Office (which allows you to install and run a good list of windows programs) and Xandros Anti-Virus (as part of the Xandros Security Suite). In addition to including all the basics to carry out essential tasks of a home user such as CD and/or DVD data recording (function integrated into Xandros File Manager), multimedia file playback (with RealPlayer), Internet browsing (through Firefox), email reading (via ThunderBird) and online conversations (via Kopete).

Xandros Desktop Home Edition-Premium

The "no compromises" and complete Home Edition. The full version of Crossover Office and the Xandros Security Suite (which includes the full version of Xandros Anti-Virus plus other new features such as daily check, monitoring and repair of system files) are included. Plus other "extras" of this edition as new programs and functionalities (of which a multimedia player stands out as an organizer of photographs and very complete graphics in functionalities), it includes the Versora Progression program also made by Xandros Incorporated which consists of transferring all our documents, music, files, bookmarks, programs, etc., from Windows to Xandros

Xandros Desktop Professional Edition

This version is especially oriented to SMEs and as a desktop for professionals. It would be equivalent in terms of functions and programs to the Home Edition-Premium version but without the Versora Progression program. instead it offers network functions for work environments as well as programs for that purpose

It offers another version for servers, Xandros Server (currently at version 2.0) with multiple options that make Xandros a worthy replacement for Windows 2000/2003. The Xandros website also offers a forum for Spanish-speaking users, very useful for new users of this distribution.

Xandros is also the factory operating system that comes with the new Eee PC.

For some Xandros is today the friendliest and most efficient option to replace Microsoft Windows or for both operating systems to coexist on a PC. The release of Xandros 5 was expected in 2007, with great expectations of performance and versatility, but this did not happen. It seems that this delay is due to Xandros concentrating his efforts on the Eee PC and also wanting to wait for new changes to Debian, the kernel and KDE. In May 2017, it seems that the Xandros website that sold it www.Xandros.com no longer exists, and the Argentine company Pixart no longer offers the Xandros operating system in Spanish, so it follows that the company may have gone bankrupt or disappeared.
