Wyatt Earp (film)
Wyatt Earp is a 1994 American western film based on the life of Wyatt Earp and his work as a marshal in the town of Tombstone, Arizona. The film, directed by Lawrence Kasdan and starring Kevin Costner, Dennis Quaid and Michael Madsen, among others, was nominated for an Oscar for best cinematography.
Plot
During the American Civil War, teenager Wyatt Earp lives on his family farm in Pella, Iowa while his older brothers Virgil and James serve in the Union Army. Wyatt tries to escape, intending to lie about his age and join the war, but his father catches him. His brothers return home at the end of the war, with James badly wounded, and the family moves west. Wyatt sees a man killed during a shootout and vomits at the sight.
The film takes another look at the life of Wyatt Earp, his work to restore law in Tombstone, and the notorious shooting at the O.K. Corral, between the Earp family and the Clantons. The plot begins with Earp's youth in California and his experiences in a world of Western brutality. Earp develops the ability to react effectively to attacks from thugs and illegals and this is worth being appointed sheriff in a town where only the law of the strongest prevails.
Earp's management earns him a reputation as a tough, energetic sheriff and uncompromising with lawbreakers by putting the town of Dodge City in order, and his fame transcends state lines. Also, he makes a lot of enemies. Besides his brothers, he only has one friend, Doc Holliday, a former doctor suffering from tuberculosis in progress and who secondes and supports him in his actions.
Earp is also married to Urilla Sutherland, but when she died of typhoid fever, he decided to run away from his pain. His brothers get police jobs in the small town of Tombstone, Arizona, where disorder, ruthless gangs like the Clantons and others, are happy to cause riots.
Wyatt Earp is recruited by his brothers as a policeman and soon becomes a marshal. In this he competes with the other dishonest commissioner who supports these gangs in order to keep his job, and also displays the photo of his naked girlfriend as a war trophy. It is then that Wyatt Earp conquers the girlfriend of this commissioner.
The Clantons challenge the Earps in a corral and the shootout kills an associate and wounds the Clantons. They take revenge leaving the older brother almost crippled and kill Wyatt Earp's younger brother. Wyatt Earp then takes them out in gunfights in different unknown locations, without mercy.
Once his mission is complete, he takes Doc Holliday to a hospital, where he stays until his inevitable death, and then goes on with his life, which gradually becomes the stuff of legend.

Production
Development
At first Costner, a fan of the old West, was going to participate in Tombstone: The Legend of Wyatt Earp (1993), but he abandoned it due to differences with the director to embark with his man from Lawrence Kasdan trusted a project about gunslinger Wyatt Earpp, in which he had complete creative control. Originally the story was intended to be made as a 6-hour miniseries. However, it was ultimately decided to make it as a film.
Preproduction
To make the film Dennis Quaid lost about 13 kilos to be able to play Doc Holliday, who suffered from tuberculosis. Wyatt Earp's revolver was also used, which he borrowed for it. Of the 92 sets that they were created for the film, 10 were saloons and, in order for it not to always look the same, each one had to be different. The complete wardrobe of the 20 main characters in the film was also created by the costume designer, the clothing of more than 1,000 extras and the 240 meters of fabric used to make all the suits and dresses that appear in the film.
Shooting
The director filmed for this film primarily in New Mexico, as he knew the place from filming Silverado there. During 5 weeks it was shot in Santa Fe and its surroundings. It was also shot on location in Antonio, Colorado, and in Cham, where the scene featuring the famous Cumbres & Toltec the longest and tallest narrow gauge steam train in the American West.
