A way to write "Wikipedia" in writing leet.

Leet speak or leet (1337 5p34k or 1337 in the script leet) is a type of script composed of alphanumeric characters, used by some communities and users of different Internet media. This writing is characterized by writing alphanumeric characters in an incomprehensible way for other foreign, inexperienced or neophyte users to the different groups that use this writing.

The term leet, pronounced lit, comes from elite.

Origin

The leet speak finds its origin in the written communication of the electronic media. It was born at the end of the 1980s in the environment of the BBS (Bulletin Board System), from a mixture of telephone and computer jargon; which has evolved as a more exclusive or private form of communication within some online communities, BBS, and online games, in order to be a writing that is not easily understood by foreign, inexperienced or neophyte users (a who in this context can be called lamers or noobs). Users who handle this script are considered to be of an elite type.

Uses

  • The first utility was for the most skilled or expert people (the elite): to prevent them from reaching the important files.
  • To avoid censorship in chat rooms during the beginning of the Internet.
  • As an alternative to a nickname already occupied, either in a chat or in a forum, a letter is replaced by some set of signs that form it, so that the nickname can pronounce equally even if different characters have been used.
  • To simply embellish a text. A clear example is the message that is written to show in instant messaging programs.
  • To avoid erasing files containing illegal material uploaded to servers, such as movies, music.

Features

The script 1337 can be written in several ways, such as the script called “simple leet” (<ˈsɪmpəl lit>) which is written in a not-so-complicated way and/or complex, example: [hello how are you?] H0L4, C0M0 35745?, which is the most commonly used, or the "Ultimate leet" (<ˈʌltɪmɪt lit>) which is the most complex, not very commonly used but famous, example: [Hello, how are you?] |-|0|_4 (0|/|0 35745, all of them use characters graphically similar to the usual ones, for example, 5 instead of S, 7 instead of T and, for radicals, |_| instead of U, |2 for R, |3 for B, or |< for K. Also, proper spelling and capitalization they are relegated to the background: what is de rigueur is creativity.

Examples

The text says: "NOW IS THE TIME" (Now is the time).
  • 35745 UD/VAILABLE!
  • m!r4 (0m0 35(r!80 1337, 7u 10 pu3d35 h4(3r 45í d3 8!3n? (See how I write leet, can you do so well?)
