Lobos is a city in Argentina, head of the party of the same name in the province of Buenos Aires. It traces its origin to the foundation made on June 2, 1802 by José Salgado.

Introduction

Located 98 km from Buenos Aires, the city of Lobos is a rich and fertile agricultural area that stands out for its dairy activity and its derivatives.

Toponymy

In 1740, the center and south of what would be the Province of Buenos Aires were explored by the First Jesuit Mission. This mission was integrated by the Rev. Father Folkner who was in charge of gathering all the information about the place. Based on his writings, the first geographical chart relating to this area was drawn up in London in 1772, registering in it and at the foot of the lagoon & # 34; L. Wolves".

The reflecting pool was inhabited by numerous otters. In those times they were known by the name of Lobos de agua or del río, so it can be deduced that the Lagoon could have taken its name from this reference made by the Mission in 1740.

The act drawn up by the Cabildo of Buenos Aires on 3-17-1752 is the oldest known document in which it is called "de Los Lobos" to the lagoon whose name gave rise to Fortín de San Pedro de Los Lobos, built in 1779, on its shores, in the second outpost against the Indian, organized by Viceroy Vertiz. The only cartographic reference available on the location of the Fort is the Plan drawn up in 1822, on the trip of the Commission to the South, by the Assistant Artillery Engineer Officer Mr. José María Reyes. In it the Lagoon is revealed and between two watercourses the existence of the fort, already destroyed, is pointed out.

Historical framework

In the 18th century two processes occurred.

The indiscriminate dairy farms caused the decrease in wild cattle, which is why the importance of the ranches as suppliers of hides for export grew. At this same time, the trans-Andean Araucanians, who had already begun to cross the mountain range, predominating over the Indians of Patagonia and mixing with them, decidedly advanced on the plain and began to drive cattle to Chile on a large scale, reducing the number of cattle. cattle in the pampas The raid began to spread and with it the confrontations with the Spanish, thus generating a struggle that would only end several decades after Independence, with the so-called Conquest of the Desert.

The line of borders came to the fore in the concern of the authorities and the occupation of the desert took on characteristics of military conquest. In 1752 the famous Blandengues companies were created: La Valerosa, which settled on the banks of the Luján River, La Invencible, which was stationed in Salto (Buenos Aires) and La Atrevida Conquistadora, which was located on the banks of the Samborombón River, in the Zanjón, today Chascomús. For its protection, three forts were built, around which a spontaneous grouping of inhabitants began to take place.

The border line was consolidated by Viceroy Vértiz and his Border Artillery Commander Francisco de Betbezé, through the construction or reconstruction of forts in 1779, which were the origin of important towns in Buenos Aires, including Fortín de San Pedro de The Wolves.

It was erected on the north bank of Laguna de Lobos, three hundred meters from the shore, in a place almost equidistant between the mouth of Arroyo Las Garzas and the point where Saladillo Rodríguez is born, and its work was completed on August 21, 1779. El Fortín was made up of a few huts made of mud and straw, without doors or windows, surrounded by a defense of sticks cut to the bottom. The presence of the Indians was warned from the mangrullo. In 1792 it was inhabited by 16 militiamen.

Don José Salgado, who had received land to work from the Viceroy towards the end of the XVIII century, erected two leagues to the north of the Fort and in the year 1802, a chapel at his expense and endowed with tools and ornaments, celebrating the first religious services on June 9, 1803. The old chapel was built on the site that occupies the current Parish Temple.

It was born like this, when this parish belonging to the Morón Parish was created, the current town, which had no neighbors other than the Salgado family, since the rest of the population, made up of 141 families, was arranged in farms and ranches in the rest of the District. When the Chapel was installed, some Families began to settle next to the path of the carts, which is why the need to delimit the layout of the Town arises.

In 1804, Don Ramón de Urquiola, a resident of the place, supported by the Parish Priest Don José García Miranda, asked the Viceroy for the Map of the Town of San Salvador de Los Lobos and the demarcation of a land for the cattle of the Church, achieving only in the year 1811 the delimitation of the Town of San Salvador de la Guardia del Partido de Lobos.

Lobos Lagoon

It is the main tourist attraction in the area. The Lobos lagoon is located 15 km from the urban area of the city of Lobos, 115 km from the Federal Capital and 130 km from the city of La Plata. Currently it has suffered numerous droughts causing the death of many aquatic species.

Your access is on route 205 km 111.5, then you have to travel 4 km along a paved road located to the left of said route to reach the reflecting pool.

La Laguna is an ideal place to practice water activities. Being located in an area of abundant vegetation you can see a wide variety of wild birds. The fish fauna made up of pejerreyes, carp, toothy, tarariras, bogas, mullets, catfish and mojarras allow unforgettable days for the fishing enthusiast.

Every year in December, since 1988, the Fiesta del Pescador Deportivo has been celebrated, declared of Municipal, Provincial and National interest, in which different aquatic activities are carried out, culminating with the election of the Queen of the Sport Fisherman and a musical show, on an aquatic stage. This party is held at the Lobos Fishing Club, which was founded in 1945.

La Laguna has its own boats and adequate cooking facilities, as well as a 105 m long dock.

Under its thick grove is the Hydrobiological station that is in charge of breeding and planting approximately 500,000 fingerlings per year, which has allowed us to maintain over the years the fundamental tourist attraction of the Lagoon: "Fishing del Pejerrey".

On the northwestern margin, is Villa Loguercio, where about 400 permanent residents reside and about 2,000 temporary residents who stay in numerous weekend houses.

In winter, thousands of fishermen from all over the country come together in the best lagoons in Buenos Aires to fish for lagoon silverside, both from the coast and from boats. So it is that the desolate routes of the province begin to come alive to be traveled by fishing excursions or individual fanatics from all over the country who travel through the night to reach the best fishing boats. And of course, every year, due to floods or river overflows, new areas appear that become part of the agenda for silverside fans.

Spring is a transition from cold to hot, making it a very difficult season to fish. And this does not affect those who are just starting out but all fishermen in general. The arrival of the first heat gives rise to progressive climatic changes that also influence the behavior of the fisherman. Unlike the harsh conditions that occur in winter, with temperatures below 0 ° C, now the fisherman finds an echo to practice his favorite sport accompanied by his family and friends.

Population

It has 29,868 inhabitants (Indec, 2010), which represents an increase of 10.8% compared to the 26,937 inhabitants (Indec, 2001) of the previous census. These figures also include the town of Empalme Lobos.

Geography

The city of Lobos is located in the Pampa Ondulada area. It is bounded to the west by the Salgado channel. To the southeast it is crossed by the Muñiz channel.

The Salgado canal divides the city center from rural areas. Lobos also has 6 lagoons: La Salada; the Salty Girl; the Culu Culu Lagoon; Colis Lagoon; Laguna Seca, and the best known: Laguna de Lobos.

In the 1980s, the geologist Víctor Mansione discovered gypsum deposits under the lagoon, the existence of which being the main reason why the lagoon did not suffer drainage.

Currently the lagoon has been a matter of political concern due to the increase in contamination and the absence of measures that should have been adopted to prevent its deterioration. However, a group of residents presented a signed petition to the Municipal Authorities requesting that the "Boca" from the Lagoon and surroundings. It should be noted that the Laguna de Lobos, unlike other lagoons in the country, is inventoried as a Wetland of Argentina due to its characteristics of salinity and water levels that provide the ideal environment for the great biodiversity that inhabits it.
