Leaves (nopal) and fruit (tuna) of the cactus.

The term sabra (from Hebrew צבר, tzabar) refers to Jewish populations born before 1948 in Israel, then known as Palestine, Land of Israel (Eretz Israel) or Holy Land and their descendants among the current Israeli population. By extension, the term refers to all those born in the State of Israel and its claimed territories (present-day Israel, Palestine, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and Jerusalem). Some also add the territories of the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights).

The word comes from the Hebrew tzabar (the name of the opuntia cactus), a figurative allusion to the tenacity and thorny character of this desert plant, which hides a tender interior and a sweet flavor.
