Wilhelm Fresenius (1912 - 2004) was a prominent German scientist renowned for his contributions to analytical chemistry.

He was born in the city of Berlin on June 17, 1912. He received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Goettingen in 1939 and worked as an assistant professor before becoming director of the Fresenius Institute at the University of Frankfurt am Main, which it had previously been founded by his grandfather, the celebrated Karl Remigius Fresenius (1818-1897). His research focused on improving the quality of drinking water. Fresenius was the author of several textbooks and chaired several organizations and institutions, including the European School for Vocational Training. Among his awards are the doctorate honoris causa from the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz and the German Grand Cross of Merit.

Died on August 2, 2004 in Taunusstein. She had two sons and a daughter. His wife Irmela had died in 1998.
