Wilhelm Ackermann (March 29, 1896 - December 24, 1962) was a German mathematician. He is best known for the Ackermann function named after him, an important example in the theory of computation.

Biography

Ackermann was born on March 29, 1896 in Schönebecke (formerly part of the Altena district and now part of the Herscheid municipality) (Germany). He received his doctorate in 1925 with his thesis Begründung des & # 34; tertium non datur & # 34; mittels der Hilbertschen Theorie der Widerspruchsfreiheit, which was a consistency proof of arithmetic without induction. From 1928 to 1948 he was a professor at the Arnoldinum Institute in Burgsteinfurt, and from then until 1961 he taught in Lüdenscheid. In addition, he was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen, as well as an honorary professor at the University of Münster in Westphalia.

He wrote Grundzüge der Theoretischen Logik (Fundamentals of Theoretical Logic) together with David Hilbert, tackling the Entscheidungsproblem (decision problem) he also constructed proofs of consistency for the set theory (1937), complete arithmetic (1940), free-type logic (1952), and a new axiomatization of set theory (1956). He wrote the book Soluble Cases of the Decision Problem (North Holland, 1954).He was a leading mathematician of that century.

Wilhelm Ackermann died in Lüdenscheid, Germany on December 24, 1962.
