Wettin's House
The House of Wettin was a dynastic house of counts, dukes, prince electors (Kurfürsten) and German monarchs who ruled the territory of what is now the federal state of Saxony for more than 800 years. Some of their representatives also managed to be elected kings of Poland. Patrilineal branches of the House of Wettin have at some point ascended the thrones of the United Kingdom, Portugal, Bulgaria, Poland, Saxony, and Belgium; of them, only the British and the Belgian remain reigning.
Origins: the Wettins of Saxony
The oldest truly known member of the House of Wettin was Dietrich or Ditheric (d. 982), whose territory lay in the vicinity of the Liesgau (located on the western edge of the Harz Mountains). Around the year 1000, as part of the German conquest of the East Slavic Marches of the Carolingian Empire, the family acquired Wettin Castle (Burg Wettin), from which they took their name. Wettin Castle is located in Wettin, in the region called Hosgau, on the banks of the Saale River. Around 1030, the Wettin family received the Saxon East March as a fief from the Holy Roman Empire.
The importance of the Wettin family in the Slavic Marches led to Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV investing them in 1089 with the Misnian March as a Holy Roman fiefdom. The family progressed in the Middle Ages: in 1263 they inherited the Landgraviate of Thuringia (although without the territory of Hesse), and in 1423 they were invested with the Duchy of Saxony, centered in Wittenberg. Thus they came to govern one of the imperial States with the title of Elector Prince of the Holy Roman Empire.
