The Western Sahara is a territory located in northwest Africa, on the Atlantic coast of the Sahara desert.

Its borders are Morocco to the north, Algeria to the east, Mauritania to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

Crossed by the Tropic of Cancer, the territory is occupied by the Sahara desert, being partly erg (sandy desert) and partly stone. The sparse vegetation only grows in the oases.

There are some species of animals adapted to the arid desert habitat, such as the desert fox, the dama gazelle, the houbara, the runner, the Senegalese sandgrouse, the monk seal, the dromedary, various reptiles, among others. Species extinct due to the historical vicissitudes of the territory are the ostrich or the oryx.
