Wesley Kanne Clark (December 23, 1944) is a retired United States Army general. He was Supreme Commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization during the Kosovo War, where he directed the NATO bombing raid on Yugoslavia. In 2003 he ran as the Democratic Party's candidate for the presidency of the United States.

Biography

Wesley Clark was born on December 23, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. His father, Benjamin Kanne, was a World War I veteran who died when Clark was just one year old. After the death of his father, his mother Veneta took him to live in Little Rock, Arkansas, and there she remarried Victor Clark, a former banker who would become Wesley's stepfather and would give him the last name he currently has. it is known.

In 1962 he was accepted into the US Military Academy at West Point to begin 38 years of service in the US military. During his stay at the academy he met Gertrude Kingston, his current wife, at a ball given to members of the navy. He finished first in his generation and won a Rhodes Scholarship to pursue a Masters in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University in the UK. At the age of 25 and with the rank of captain, he commanded a company of mechanized infantry in Vietnam, being wounded with four projectiles in combat. His performance in Southeast Asia earned him the US Army Silver Medal.

During his military career, General Clark commanded battalions in the United States and Germany, specializing in those battalions with discipline problems or poor evaluations and turning them into exemplary units. At the start of the Persian Gulf War, Clark was already a general and was in charge of the National Training Center of the US Army. In 1997, he was appointed Supreme Allied Commander in Europe (SACEUR) of NATO and directed from that position the American military actions in the Kosovo war, the bloodiest in Europe since World War II.

In the winter of 2003, Wesley Clark ran as the Democratic Party's candidate for President of the United States. Among those who expressed their support for him publicly, the film director Michael Moore stands out.
