Waterworld
Waterworld (in Latin America, Mundo Acuático) is a post-apocalyptic action and science fiction film 1995 American film directed by Kevin Reynolds and co-written by Peter Rader and David Twohy. Based on Rader's original 1986 screenplay, it stars Kevin Costner, who also produced it along with Charles Gordon and John Davis. It was distributed by Universal Pictures. It was the most expensive film ever made at the time. It was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Sound at the 68th Academy Awards.
The film's setting is set in the distant future. Although an exact date is not given in the film, it has been suggested that it takes place in the year 2500. The polar ice caps have melted completely, and the sea level has risen by more than 8.2 km, covering almost the entire Earth. land. The film illustrates this with an unusual variation on the Universal Pictures logo, which begins with the usual image of Earth, but shows the planet's water levels gradually rising and the polar caps melting until almost all of the land is submerged.. The film's plot centers on an unnamed anti-hero, "The Mariner", a drifter who navigates the Earth in his trimaran.
Plot
By 2500, the ice caps have completely melted and sea levels have risen by more than 7,600 meters. As a result, all of Earth's continents are now under water. The remnants of human civilization live in ramshackle floating communities known as atolls, which long ago forgot they lived on land. Even so, people still believe that there should be a mythological "Mainland" somewhere in the ocean.
The Sailor (Kevin Costner), a lonely drifter, arrives with his trimaran to trade dirt, a rare commodity, for other supplies. The residents of the atoll see that the sailor is a mutant with gills and webbed feet and decide to drown him in the atoll's recycling pit, a sort of liquid compost facility. At that moment, the atoll is attacked by the Smokies, a band of pirates looking for a girl named Enola (Tina Majorino) who, according to their leader, the Deacon (Dennis Hopper), has a map of the mainland tattooed on her face. back. Enola's guardian, Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn), tries to escape with the girl in a balloon along with Gregor (Michael Jeter), an inventor, but the balloon leaves too soon. Instead, Helen rescues the Sailor and insists that she take them with him.
The three escape into the open sea aboard the trimaran. They are pursued by the Smoky Ones, and, although they escape, Helen's actions result in damage to the Sailor's ship, so she cuts their hair. Later, Helen explains that she believes that humans once lived on land and demands to know from the Sailor where she found the land. He gives her a diving bell and plunges it underwater, revealing the remains of a city and land on the ocean floor, affirming Helen's belief. When they surface, they discover that the Smoky ones have caught up with them, threatening to kill them if they don't reveal to Enola that she is hiding aboard the ship. The Sailor takes Helen and they dive underwater to avoid capture and the Sailor with her gill helps Helen to breathe. When they surface, they discover that Enola has been kidnapped and the ship destroyed. Gregor manages to catch up and rescue them, leading them to a new makeshift atoll inhabited by the survivors of the first attack.
The Sailor gets a water ski from a captured smoker to pursue the Deacon aboard the ship Exxon Valdez. With most of the Smokers below deck to row the tanker, the Marine confronts the Deacon, threatening to ignite the oil reserves still in the tank unless he returns Enola. The Deacon believes that the Sailor is lying, knowing that he would destroy the ship, but, to his surprise, the Sailor drops a flare into the oil. The lower decks of the ship are immediately engulfed in flames, and the ship begins to sink. The Sailor rescues Enola and escapes via a rope from Gregor's balloon. When the Sailor brings Enola to Helen, the Deacon manages to grab the rope to escape the sinking ship. He shoots at the balloon, jarring her and Enola falls back into the ocean, where Deacon quickly rejoins her men on jet skis to capture her. The Sailor makes an impromptu bungee jump from the balloon to grab Enola just before Deacon and his men collide and are killed in the explosion.
Some time later, Gregor has been able to identify the tattoo on Enola's back as coordinates with directions reversed. With the atoll of survivors following them, Gregor the Sailor, Helen and Enola discover the dry land, the top of Mount Everest, teeming with vegetation and wildlife. They find a crude cabin with the remains of Enola's parents. When the survivors of the atoll come to settle on land, the sailor decides that he cannot stay because his place is the sea. He builds a new sailboat and leaves. At the end of the film, the sailor is seen leaving on his new sailboat. The scene continues with the credits, and further on it can be seen, in the distance, how the sailboat turns and returns to the island.
Characters
- Mariner: played by Kevin Costner. Star of the story. It is a mutant with gills and membranes that allow you to breathe under water and swim faster than any human being. It is solitary and uncomfortable, almost incapable of empathizing with anyone, but Helen and Enola will come to awaken in it a profound weakness. Mariner does not believe in the dry land, claiming that he has traveled all oceans and can manifest his inexistence. It is suggested that this unbelief comes from its attachment to the seas that tends to explore, coming to visit the post-apocalyptic remains of the past in the depths.
- Helen: interpreted by Jeanne Tripplehorn. She's a woman who lives in the atoll taking care of Enola and selling all kinds of supplies. He believes blindly in the existence of the dry earth, limiting himself to asserting that human beings are not made to live in the sea. During an attack by the Humeantes he manages to take it along with Enola to get lost in the immense blue mass that fears and hates so much, and that according to Mariner, it is the only thing there is.
- Enola: interpreted by Tina Majorino. Orphan girl raised by Helen. Her parents lived on the dry land and she has tattooed on her back a strange drawing that could be the map that leads to her place of origin. It is extremely curious and restless, and like to draw with waxes (one of the many preapocalyptic treasures that Mariner has on his boat). Enola does not know how to swim (probably because of its origin), and this is a dangerous weakness on a flooded planet, but with Mariner's teaching he will learn. This generates a strong bond between the two. Enola means "only" ("Alone" written backwards).
- The Deacon: played by Dennis Hopper. The religious leader of the Humeantes is a cruel character to the same as comical for his evil sentences and sentences, often loaded with irony. He loses an eye because of Mariner in his first but distant encounter. He and the Humeantes have their base at Exxon Valdez and worship their former captain Joseph Hazelwood as a saint. He seizes the secret of the way to dry land and kills anyone who stands in his way.

Production
Kevin Costner wanted to be an action hero, the one genre he needed to be the ultimate star. That's why he wanted to make this movie. However, the film became a disaster during production due to a series of errors and miscalculations. On the one hand, film production took place almost entirely on water. This made it very difficult to carry out and thus lengthened the filming time enormously. It would be devastated by two hurricanes that stopped production and completely destroyed the sets.
In this way the filming, which should have lasted 96 days, became 220 days. That led to the initial budget of the film, which was 60 million dollars, ended up being 170 million dollars. In this way, it became the historical record in a film production up to that time. Additionally, another 65 million were invested in advertising, with which the total cost of Waterworld had to finally amount to 235 million dollars.
Premieres
Reception
