Symbols of warchalking (from top to bottom: open node, closed node and WEP node).

Warchalking is a language of symbols usually written in chalk on walls that inform potential stakeholders of the existence of a wireless network at that point.

Inspired by the language of symbols used by homeless people, its simplicity has been one of the factors that have made possible its proliferation in large cities. In addition, other characteristics such as the non-durability of brands for long periods make it very dynamic and constantly adapt to the changing characteristics of the networks whose existence it reports.

The most used symbols are:

  • SSID
  • (Open node() Node closed, (W) Node with WEP
  • 1.5 Bandwidth
  1. First the name of the node is identified, or SSID
  2. Secondly, the type of network is identified either open, closed or WEP
  3. Ultimately the speed of the same is identified

An example of for all this could be:

Retina
) (
1.5

This identifies an open node, using the SSID "Retina" and has a bandwidth of 1.5 Mbps.
