Walk from Güell to Lluch on foot
From Güell to Lluch on foot (in Catalan Marxa des Güell a Lluc a peu), is a march that takes place every year on the first Saturday of the month of August on the Spanish island of Majorca.
History
On July 17, 1974, a group of friends decided to march from the now-defunct Güell bar to the Monastery of Lluch to thank the virgin who is venerated there —and who is the patron de Mallorca—, that a girl escaped unharmed in an accident.
One day later, on July 18, 1974, the first march From Güell to Lluch on foot began, in which around thirty people participated.
In the following five years it was repeated without hardly increasing the number of marchers, but in 1980, and thanks to the fact that the savings bank of the Balearic Islands Sa Nostra sponsored the event and publicized it massively in the media, the march considerably increased the number of participants, increasing each year progressively until reaching the 40,000 people who currently walk it.
On August 6, 1993, kilometer zero was inaugurated in front of the old Güell bar. The ceremony was attended by the King and Queen of Spain who gave the starting signal.
Features
The march begins at eleven o'clock at night on the first Saturday of August in the Güell square, in the former location of the Güell bar. The sanctuary of Lluch is about 46 kilometers away and the average time to visit it is from 8 to 13 hours. The Monastery of Lluch is located in the center of the Sierra de Tramontana, at about 800 meters above sea level. Approximately, half of the way is flat, and the other ascending, accentuating the slope as the goal approaches. Throughout the march you walk on paved road.
Throughout the route, participants can recover strength at various medical and refreshment points that are installed along the route.
A lighter variant is the one organized by the Marrachí town hall, which consists of traveling by bus from the municipality to Inca and from there, starting the pilgrimage on foot to Lluch.
