A voivodeship (Polish: województwo; plural: województwa) is the highest-level administrative subdivision of Poland. The term has been in use since the 14th century and is commonly translated as province or state.

The Polish local government reforms adopted in 1998, which came into effect on January 1, 1999, created 16 new voivodeships. These replaced the former 49 voivodeships that had existed since July 1, 1975, and bear a closer resemblance (in territory but not in name) to the voivodeships that existed between 1950 and 1975.

Current voivodeships are mostly named after historical and geographic regions, while those prior to 1998 generally took their names from the cities in which they were centered. The new units range in area from less than 10,000 km² (Opole Voivodeship) to more than 35,000 km² (Mazovian Voivodeship), and in population from almost one million (Opole Voivodeship) to more than five million (Mazovian Voivodeship).).

Administrative authority at the voivodeship level is shared between a government-appointed governor called a voivode (wojewoda), an elected assembly called a sejmik, and an executive board (< i>zarząd województwa) elected by that assembly, headed by a voivode marshal (marszałek województwa). Voivodeships are further divided into powiats (counties) and gminas (communes or municipalities).
