A voice actor or vocal actor, unlike a theater actor, is an interpreter assigned to the specialty of the acting career who provides his voice for any support audiovisual, such as animated films, video games, advertising, audiobooks, radio drama or television series. In animated movies and series, dialogue is almost always recorded early in production, as it is used as a reference to animate the characters' facial movements. Unlike a voice actor, who must adjust to certain parameters, since he has to convey the character and emotions of the original actor or narrator, the voice actor creates the basis of the character in animated series or video games in which there is no predecessor voice.

Voice actors are also heard through pre-recorded and automated announcements that are part of modern day life in areas such as stores, elevators, waiting rooms, and public transportation. The role of a voice actor may involve singing, most often when portraying a fictional character, though a freelance performer is sometimes enlisted as the character's singing voice.
