The district of Villa María del Triunfo is one of the forty-three districts that make up the province of Lima, located in the department of the same name, in Peru. It limits to the north, with the district of La Molina; to the east, with the district of Pachacámac; to the south, with the district of Lurín; to the southwest, with the district of Villa El Salvador; and to the west, with the district of San Juan de Miraflores.

According to their income per household capital, the district is made up of families of medium, low-middle and low socioeconomic level, being also one of the most populated districts in the country.

History

Before the creation of the district, two important human centers had been formed, in part of what is today Villa María del Triunfo: Tableda de Lurín and Villa Poeta José Gálvez Barrenechea.

Subsequently, the concern of a group of people belonging to the Society of Workers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of the Surquillo district arose, who were in a deplorable life situation; Therefore, they did not hesitate to found the El Triunfo de la Restauración Society, aimed at discovering vacant land for the construction of homes.

To this end, its members appointed an Exploration Commission, and divided into two groups that left Surquillo on August 4, 1949, heading south. The first of them, runs through the estates of Higuereta and La Calera; while, the second, does the same through the district of Santiago de Surco to Quebrada Honda (kilometer 20), where they finally settle.

After other attempts, on August 6, 1949, almost all of the families of the Society of Workers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus traveled on the Lima - Lurín Railway to Quebrada Honda, to then proclaim with the raising of flags possession of those lands, founding the Nueva Esperanza Housing Association, included within its jurisdiction kilometers 20 and 23 of the Lima - Atocongo highway.

However, as a consequence of explosive migrations, 70 families with a modest economic situation from Piñonate, Mendocita and Matute invaded the Quebrada Honda area. Thus joining the group of Nueva Esperanza residents who had just settled.

Upon verifying that the area was too small to accommodate everyone, a group of associates decided to take possession of an adjacent ravine, at kilometers 16 and 19 and on the highway to Atocongo, because it was wider and more accessible to the city. from Lima.

The place, owned by shepherds who had used the natural resources of the area since 1919, was occupied by the aforementioned residents, who agreed to change the name of "La Esperanza" by 'El Triunfo', acquiring legal status on October 1, 1956 (page 15, volume 04, Records of Associations of Lima).

On August 8, 1960, a group of residents was evicted from the banks of the Rímac River to build the Santa Rosa Bridge on Tacna Avenue. Through María Delgado de Odría, they were relocated to the old army firing range at the foot of Cerro Vigía and the surrounding hills, joined by families from the Surquillo neighborhood.

As a sign of gratitude, the founders subsequently chose to add the name of the wife of the President of the Republic, Manuel A. Odría, María Delgado de Odría, for supporting the creation of the district. By law 13796, on December 28, 1961, the district of Villa María del Triunfo was created, which was segregated from the districts of Santiago de Surco and Lurín.

In its beginnings it only bordered the districts of Chorrillos, Santiago de Surco, La Molina, Pachacámac and Lurín. He even had access to the sea through Conchán and Venice beaches; However, it lost it after the founding of the Villa El Salvador district.

Today, Villa María del Triunfo is made up of 6 defined zones: José Carlos Mariátegui, Cercado, Inca Pachacutec, Nueva Esperanza, Tablada de Lurín and José Gálvez Barrenechea, and a seventh in the process of consolidation Nuevo Milenio.
