Villa Ángela is a city located in the southwest of the province of Chaco (Argentina). It is the head of the Mayor Luis Jorge Fontana department.

Its main economic activity is agriculture.

History

In 1906, two Swiss men, Carlos Grüneisen and Julio Ulises Martín (1862-1934), acquired a huge ranch in the interior of the province of Chaco, where several towns would later be formed: Villa Ángela, Enrique Urién and Pueblo Díaz.

In 1908, due to a drought, a group of employees moved their ranch from the company's first location in Enrique Urién to the west, about 25 km. Without knowing it, the new geography where they settled would make up the first population center of Villa Ángela, the neighborhood currently called Pueblo Viejo.

In 1910, Martín and Grüneisen founded the La Suiza ranch, a few kilometers from where their laborers had settled two years before. It is very probable that the company decided to build the farmhouse where it is currently located (on the outskirts of Villa Ángela) in anticipation of the imminent arrival of the railway in the coming years. And that this itself has motivated the company to subdivide and sell lots for housing in the vicinity of where the Santa Fe Provincial Railroad station would finally be built. Thus, between 1910 and 1917 the second urban nucleus was populated, in the sector of the city that today is called Centro, from the train station to the north of the city.

The name of Villa Ángela is in homage to Ángela Joostens, the wife of Julio Ulises Martín. And it appears on the scene since 1914, the year in which the railway station was baptized with that name and the subdivision plans were sent to the government of the territory. According to the historian Guido Miranda, in 1914 Julio Martín sent the plans to Governor Gancedo, where he alludes to the future name of Villa Ángela.

On August 8, 1917, the decree creating Elementary School No. 11 was signed. In 1921 Elementary School No. 82 was created, which came to alleviate the need for the old settlement or Pueblo Viejo.

In 1923 the first Municipal Commission was organized. The following year settlers from different origins settled in the area surrounding the town (Colonia J. J. Paso), who began to cultivate corn, sunflower and cotton. Members of the Bulgarian and Hungarian communities stood out in particular. The latter celebrated in 2012 the 80th anniversary of their arrival in the region.

Since 1950, important carnivals have been held in Villa Ángela. This popular festival runs from mid-January to the beginning of March, and has five adult troupes (Ara Sunu, Bahía, Hawaiianas, La Nueva and Samberos de Itá Berá) and four children's troupes (Hawaianitos, Ara Sunito, Bahianitos and Samberitos of Itá Berá).
