Victoria April
Victoria Mérida Rojas, known as Victoria Abril (Madrid, July 4, 1959), is a Spanish actress and singer, whose career has developed mainly in Spain. and France, although he has also worked in other countries.
Artistic career
He was born in 1959 and grew up between Benajarafe (Málaga) and Madrid. Since she was little, she has been interested in dance and studies classical ballet. At the age of fifteen, she directs her steps towards the cinema, debuting as an actress in the film Obsession, by Francisco Lara Polop.
In 1975 and 1976 he appeared briefly in the films Robin and Marian, directed by Richard Lester and starring Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn, The Bridge, by Juan Antonio Bardem and The man who knew how to love, by Miguel Picazo.
Between 1976 and 1978, she became very popular when she became a hostess for the contest One, two, three... respond again, devised by Narciso Ibáñez Serrador for Television Spanish.
In 1977 he played the leading role in Cambio de sexo, previously rejected by Ángela Molina. Thus began a fruitful collaboration with Vicente Aranda, for whom he would star in some of his most relevant films, including The Girl with the Golden Panties (1980), Silent Time (1986), The Lute: Walk or Bust (1987), Lovers (1991) and Libertarians (1996). Thus, he cemented one of the most brilliant acting careers in Spanish cinema, in which directors such as Mario Camus (La colmena), Jaime Chávarri (Bicycles are for summer) have a place.), Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón (The most beautiful night), Pedro Almodóvar (Tie me up!, High heels, Kika) or Carlos Saura (The Seventh Day).
Her excellent role in the film Tie me up! by Pedro Almodóvar, impressed a young Penélope Cruz so much that the Madrid-born woman decided that one day she would dedicate herself to the world of cinema as its protagonist, for the which he has always professed a deep admiration.
With El Lute she won her first Silver Shell for Best Actress at the San Sebastian Festival and for her work in Amantes she received the equivalent Silver Bear at the Berlin Festival. Nominated nine times (six in a row) for the Goya Award, she only won it in 1995 for Nobody will talk about us when we die, by Agustín Díaz Yanes, with whom she collaborated again in No news from God (2001) and I just want to walk (2008).
His foray into Hollywood, with Barry Levinson's Jimmy Hollywood, is not very productive. She then rejects the leading role of The Turkish Passion , which then falls to Ana Belén.
On television he appears in series such as La barraca (1979) or Los pazos de Ulloa (1985), as well as under the orders of Vicente Aranda in a chapter of The footprint of the crime (The crime of Captain Sánchez, 1985) and in The riders of dawn (1991). She is also in short films such as Pour elle (2009), directed by Blanca Li.
