Vichy (/vi.ʃi/) is a French city and commune in the Allier department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. During World War II it was the seat of the government of Vichy France between 1940 and 1944.

Vichy is the second commune in the department in number of inhabitants and known for its water springs and its thermal centers.

Geography

It is located in a small valley of the Allier river, 45 km south of Moulins and 50 km northeast of Clermont-Ferrand.

History

It belonged to the former French province of Bourbonés. Between 1940 and 1944 it was the seat of the government of Vichy France during World War II.
