Verdana

Verdana is a highly legible sans serif typeface commissioned by Microsoft and designed by Matthew Carter.

It was released in 1994 and is installed by default on all Macintosh and Windows systems. Since it is part of the "Microsoft Core Fonts for the web" and which has been available for free download from the Microsoft site for many years, many Linux and other Unix installations use it as well.

It is often considered an excellent typeface for reading on a monitor screen, which is what it was intended to do. Since it is installed on most of the world's computers, it is very common to find it referenced in the main text of a web page.

Tahoma is a typeface derived from Verdana, also known as Verdana Narrow.[citation needed]
