Venus williams
Venus Ebony Starr Williams Price (Lynwood, California, June 17, 1980) is an American professional tennis player, winner of seven Grand Slam titles. Her younger sister, Serena (b. 1981), is also a professional tennis player.
Venus won 49 WTA singles tournaments, including seven Grand Slam singles (five at Wimbledon, two at the United States Open), one WTA Tour Championships and nine Tier 1s. In doubles she has achieved 14 Grand Slam titles and two WTA Tier 1 titles, all of them together with her sister Serena. She also achieved four gold medals at the Olympic Games.
On February 25, 2002, she became the first African-American player to be number 1 in the WTA rankings. She held that position for 11 weeks in three stints.
Biography
Venus is the daughter of Richard Williams (tennis coach) (and coach of both sisters) and Oracene Price; currently divorced. She has 4 sisters: Yetunde, Isha, Lyndrea and Serena.
When the five Williams sisters were children, they moved to a humble house in Compton (a neighborhood where gangs abound), California. Her father Richard used to take his five daughters to the tennis courts in the hope that one day at least one of them would achieve sporting glory and thus move to a better place.
From an early age she became one of California's best young players and, along with her sister Serena, shared the top seed as California's best young players for long stretches.
Venus turned professional in the 1990s and had a very lucrative career. She has won many major championships, including three Olympic gold medals (singles and doubles in Sydney 2000; doubles in Beijing 2008), the Fed Cup, the 1999 French Open in women's doubles, (with her sister Serena as couple), the Oklahoma City Tournament, the Italian Open, the Hamburg Open, the Wimbledon Championships 5 times, and the US Open twice.
Another feat for Venus and, without a doubt, for tennis history was having become the first black woman to reach the top of the WTA world ranking, a fact she achieved in February 2002 (however, the tennis player Althea Gibson was considered the best in the world in the run-up to the ranking). To the above, we should add the 1-2 that she did with Serena in said list, being the first sisters to achieve such a feat, although her sister would steal the limelight, defeating her in four consecutive Grand Slam finals (Roland Garros, Wimbledon and US Open 2002 and Australia 2003), which once again would ratify the undeniable dominance that the Williams sisters had over the other players; dominance that is evident in moments of lucidity in the game of the Americans, who on several occasions have surprised with unexpected comebacks.
When Venus and Serena won the 1999 French Open in the women's doubles, they became the first sisters to win the title in the century XX.
In 2003, Venus played in the final at Wimbledon despite suffering from abdominal discomfort. She lost to her sister Serena de ella, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6.
Older sister, Yutende Price, was killed by gunfire in the Compton area on the morning of September 14, 2003; This fact, linked to the divorce of her parents, led to her being somewhat distanced from the courts and to being harshly criticized by sports specialists who thought that she was in the twilight of her career.
In another episode, Venus was involved in a traffic accident that caused a fatality. The local police affirmed that the tennis star committed an offense at a street junction when he changed lanes, as reported by the US media. According to Linda Barson, the victim's driver and wife, she struck Williams' car because he failed to stop in time, killing a 78-year-old.
2004 was a year that went almost unnoticed for this athlete, but her story would not stop there. In 2005, far from any favoritism and having won only one tournament so far this year, she entered the prestigious Wimbledon tournament, which she had managed to win twice. Starting as the 14th seed in the tournament, quietly and with good rhythm, she reached the final, but not before overwhelmingly defeating the defending champion and then number two in the world, the Russian María Sharápova, in just two sets, the last of which reflected a clear 6-1. Her final pitted her against one of her great opponents on the courts: her compatriot Lindsay Davenport, number one at that time, whom she defeated in three sets, winning a match that she had practically lost by raising a point for game. Thus, she became the player in the entire history of the tournament with the lowest seeding who managed to lift the Wimbledon trophy, to which would be added the fact that it was the longest women's final in the history of the prestigious tournament, since the confrontation lasted for two hours and forty-five minutes of play.
2006 was not a very productive year for the eldest of the Williamses. He lost in the first round of the Australian Open and in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, in addition, he could not successfully defend the crown obtained on the London grass the previous year (thus ending the hegemony of the Williams sisters in Wimbledon, since Venus had arrived at the final in 2000 and 2001 -winning-, 2002 and 2003 -losing with her sister Serena- and 2005 -winning-, for her part, Serena did the same in 2002, 2003 and 2004 -being this the only year that until then another name other than Williams, bathed in glory-) and not winning any tournament that season.
In 2007, in her first appearance of the year, she managed to be crowned champion of the Memphis tournament. Venus would thus obtain a new title after almost two years, since until then her last crown was the tray that accredited the Wimbledon champion, in 2005. In the final she defeated the rising Israeli Shahar Peer, who in Australia had given Samples of being a strong rival to be beaten by the experienced players on the circuit. Venus scored a stunning 6-1 double. In the Wimbledon final of that year, she defeated Bartoli, thus winning her fourth tournament in the English open.
In 2008, she repeats the Wimbledon crown, defending it against her sister Serena. After a slow start, Venus manages to gain a foothold and win the game in straight sets. After several years of injuries and illnesses, as of August 2011, she was ranked number 36 in the world.
On September 1, 2011, she announced her withdrawal from the US Open when she had to face the German Sabine Lisicki in the second round due to the recent diagnosis of Sjögren's Syndrome.
In 2015, she won her 46th title in Auckland, beating Caroline Wozniacki in the final. At the Australian Open she falls in the quarterfinals against Madison Keys. At Roland Garros she loses surprisingly to Sloane Stephens in the first round 7-6, 6-1. At Wimbledon she falls to her sister Serena Williams in the 4th round by partials of 6-4 and 6-3. At the US Open, she fell again in the quarterfinals against Serena by partials 2-6, 6-1 and 3-6.
In 2017, she lost in the final of the Australian Open to her sister Serena Williams 6-4, 6-4. At the WTA Tournament in St. Petersburg, she lost in her debut (2nd round) against Kristina Mladenovic 6-3, 6-1. She returned to compete at the Indian Wells Masters where she lost in the quarterfinals to Yelena Vesnina. At the Miami Masters, she fell in the semifinals against Johanna Konta. At the Charleston Tournament she lost her debut to Laura Siegemund. In the clay court season she reached the quarterfinals at the Rome Masters and the fourth round at Roland Garros. At Wimbledon she lost the final against Garbiñe Muguruza 7-5 and 6-1. In the Canadian Masters, she fell in the third round against Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-1 in 1 hour of play. At the Cincinnati Masters she surprisingly lost in the second round to Ashleigh Barty in 3 sets. In the US Open she reached the semifinals playing at a high level but lost in 3 sets against Sloane Stephens. In the Hong Kong Tournament, she defeated Risa Ozaki in the first round and lost in the second round to Naomi Osaka. In the WTA Finals she reaches the final after passing the Round Robin. In the final she loses to Caroline Wozniacki by a double 6-4.
2018 was a very difficult year for Venus. She falls at the first exchange in the Sydney Tournament and in the Australian Open. She achieves her first wins of the year in the Federation Cup against Arantxa Rus and Richel Hogenkamp
After not being able to overcome her health problems that have kept her away in the greater stretches of the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons, she decided not to participate in the upcoming 2021 US Open, like her sister Serena, which would be the first time in 18 years that the tennis tournament did not have his presence. Many have already interpreted it as a possible withdrawal from active tennis.
