The Venezia Football Club is an Italian football club from the city of Venice, in Veneto. It was founded in 1907, and since the 2022/23 season it has competed in Serie B, the second category of Italian football. His first team plays its home games at the Pierluigi Penzo Stadium, with capacity for 7,389 spectators.

History

Foundation and early years

The Venezia Foot Ball Club was founded on December 14, 1907, at the Trattoria Corte dell'Orso a few steps from Campo San Bortolomio to Venice from twenty professionals and amateurs through the merger of the two football club sections: Palestra Marziale in Mestre and Costantino Reyer in Venice. The place chosen by the founders to create the new soccer entity, was the now defunct trattoria "Corte Nane Da en Bear", a few steps from the central Venetian square of San Bartolomé. Among the founders was the Swiss right-back Walter Aemisseger, who came from the Swiss team in Winterthur, and who was the first captain of the club, accompanied by Guido Battisti, Antonio Borella, Gerardo Bortoletti, David Fano, the first president Aldo Federici, the coach Peter Golzio, Silvio Lorenzetti, Pietro Piccoli, the first Pitteri, Alessandro Santos, Santos Marcello, Luigi Vianello, Pietro and Mario Visintin Vivante.

In those years the games were played in the pine forest of Sant'Elena. Training sessions were held at the Chiovere camp instead. The first games of Venezia were played against the Venetian teams from Padua, Verona and Vicenza, as well as against the crews of the ships that arrived in the port of the city. The first game played by Venezia FC was played on December 22, 1907 against Vicenza Calcio and ended with the result of 1-1.

Between 1908 and 1910 the Venezia contested the then Third Category championship. In their Prima Categoria debut they qualified directly to the semi-final against the winner of Lombardy because they were the only registered Venetian club but in the tie against US Milanese they were literally inundated with goals (losing 7-1 in the first leg and 11-2 in the return), showing that they were not yet competitive for the First Division.

1910s

In the 1910-1911 season the neroverdi firmly established themselves in the first category and in the 1911-1912 season Venezia, after winning the Venezia-emiliano round, reached the national final against Pro Vercelli, against whom they lost 7- 0 in the first leg and 6-0 in the return. On September 7, 1913, the Sant'Elena stadium was inaugurated, which had fences, changing rooms and stands for more than 500 spectators.

In the 1914-1915 season, the last championship played before the war, the Lagunari landed, being immediately eliminated, in group A of the semifinal with Casale, Genoa and Juventus. During World War I, soccer activity in Venice would not totally cease thanks to the efforts of the small company of the Aurora F.B.C. Notable players from this period include the three unknowns in Trieste, then citizens of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Stritzel, Riccobon and Marincich, plus the strong striker Umberto Vecchina.

In April 1919, at the Palazzo Gritti-Faccanon, at the then headquarters of the Gazzettino, members of the Venice F.B.C. and Aurora F.B.C., a minor company from Venice, decided to join forces to change the name of the Nero Verde team to Associazione Calcio Venezia. On this occasion, the Government also contributed to the relaunch of the association with an extraordinary contribution of 40,000 lire, as compensation for having used the sports field as a military base.

1930s

In 1934-35 it reverts to the name of Venezia but, after a long playoff involving 8 teams, the Lagunari retire in Serie C. Serie C, from which they immediately return to Serie B in 1937- 38 with President Arnaldo at the head. Bennati. A year to consolidate in the second national series and, in 1938-39, Venezia, winning in Bergamo (0-1), the first transfer with a large number of followers and thanks to a goal by Pernigo, hooked Atalanta in the second ranking place and, for better ratio networks, he crosses it by crossing the Serie A threshold for the first time in a single group. The coach is Giuseppe Girani. Before Italy entered the war, in Serie A 1939-40, the Neroverdi finished in 9th place in a tournament won by Ambrosiana-Inter (however, they were defeated by the Venetians al Penzo 1-0), while in the ranks of Venezia, the future champion Valentino Mazzola makes his debut.

1940s

Associazione Fascista Calcio Venezia, champion of the Italian Cup in 1941.

But it wasn't until 1940 when the club, under the new name of Associazione Fascista Calcio Venezia, was inscribed with gold letters in a title. It was the conquest of the Italian Cup against AS Roma, at the hands of a historic couple at the club, made up of Ezio Loik and Valentino Mazzola. It is known as the most successful period of the club, since that title was accompanied by a final runner-up in said competition two years later.

1960s

Here there are three good tournaments in the lower division, a fourth saved to the playoffs with Monza and Taranto (1960) and again a bulk with the leadership of coach Anacleto Ligabue and extraordinary Quario. Thus, in June 1961, Venezia returned to Serie A with a highly technical team and an atypical scorer like the very long and dynamic Gino Raffin (17 goals).

At the celebration of the event, at the end of the last game in Penzo, Mayor John Favaretto Fisca utters the famous phrase in front of 18,000 spectators: "La Venezia will have the new biggest stadium on the continent."

The presidency is in the hands of the young Count Giovanni Volpi di Misurata, his deputy councilors Anacleto Ligabue and Enrico Linetti.

A procession of gondolas escorted the Bissona Serenissima, with the players on board, to Piazza San Marco to receive the embrace of the city.

The 1961-1962 Championship, which is in Serie A after 11 years of absence, he sees a Venezia invigorated by a defender of the stature of Juan Santisteban, before the Real Madrid midfielder and the backbone of the complex does not differ from the one in which the Cadet Championship was obtained the previous year. Cherries in the extraordinary cake home match with AC Milan (later Italian Champions), they won 2-1 with Raffin's game-winning goal and a 3-0 win in the final match with Juventus at home, so that docked in the middle of the table. Records of the year, the 24,000 spectators in a sold-out Penzo for the match against Milan (and 5,000 people strolling through the pine forest of Santa Elena, without being able to find tickets).

Not so lucky next season in which Venezia, despite having the Turkish champion Can Bartù and Santisteban himself, cannot avoid relegation among the cadets. Partial consolation is the historical record of 28,000 spectators in Penzo for the match against Inter, after another 4,000-foot room has been recovered on the south curve, a curve hitherto only partially used.

The staff of the Venezia season 1963-64.

Commissioner Lorenzo Bettini is taken over by a new commissioner, small businessman Mario Gatto. The team floats between highs and lows in the middle of the Serie B classification for a couple of championships. Then the tail strike. And Mario Gatto manages to recover Serie A by winning the cadet tournament as a record holder. Among the main architects of the successful coach Armando Segato, the players Menacci and Bertogna in attack, and genius in the offensive midfield Ferruccio Mazzola, the second son of the great Valentino, a former Neroverdean idol twenty-five years earlier.

However, it is not yet another return to the top league. The Venice of changing management, the new commissioner is Fiorenzo Fabbi, the workforce is modest despite having entered Víctor Benítez and Pedro Manfredini big winger bomber "big foot" of his career. The coup de grace gives the home game with Inter (later vicescudettata) that two goals were canceled for Manfredini, appeared in all valid. So a game won by theory 4-3 becomes a loss for 2-3.

The ensuing controversy also showed a firm stance also by the head of the Football Federation's designating referee, the Venetian arbitration commissioner Piergiorgio Bertotto that resigning his resignation from office, ruling after it became a historic phrase: "psychological submission arbitration".

The 1967-1968 championship marks a fleeting return to Serie B, but the situation of the company and is precipitating neroverdi, while combined with 4 other teams, was demoted due to a series of endless play-offs (including two phases). Therefore, after 12 years, Venezia is back in Serie C.

1970s

Having abandoned the dreams of glory of the big series, Series C became the reality of those years. Meanwhile, on September 11, 1970, a tornado hit Venice, particularly the island of Sant'Elena. There were casualties in the city and a lot of damage, among which the Penzo stadium was particularly affected. Part of the boundary wall was torn down and the grandstand and roof were extensively damaged, but restoration was slow.

In 1970-1971, the Venetians under the leadership of Enrico Radio achieved fourth place, the following year with Sergio Manente later replaced by Radio himself, they came to seventh. Two seasons in which a striker like Roberto Bellinazzi came to the fore, capable of scoring 27 goals in total in the two years. In 1972-1973, Venezia played promotion in Serie B. At the head was the Friulian Cesare Meucci, in the field the experts Ardizzon, Serato, Modonese and Nello Scarpa stood out. After two days from the end, the green blacks arrived in Parma and Udinese. On the last day at the Penzo stadium they hosted Marchioro's Alexandria who was chasing at one point. In the presence of 14,000 spectators, the green blacks suffered the cruelest of jokes when they were defeated 2-0. The victory of the championship if they competed in a play-off of Parma and Udinese.

1990s

Maurizio Zamparini was president of Venice from 1987 to 2002.

With the beginning of the Zamparini era and thanks to the integration of the two roses of Venice and Mestre, the team was immediately promoted to Serie C1 (1987-1988 season) and the following year obtained salvation that allowed it maintain its Category (Series C1). After two settlement championships, in the 1990-1991 season (the fifth with Zamparini's president from 86-87), after a playoff for second place he played in Cesena, in front of 7000 Venetian and Mestre fans, and won 2-1 against Como, Alberto Zaccheroni's Venice reconquered the B, confirming what was expressed by the skipper at the time of the union of the two professional companies of the City of Venice.

Due to insufficient capacity for the new category of the Baracca stadium in Mestre, it was decided to restructure and expand, with the removal of the athletics track, the Pierluigi Penzo stadium in Venice, twenty-three years after the last appearance in the Serie B de la laguna (while Mestre had played his only league cadet there in 1946-1947).

In 1997-1998, Venice, led by Walter Novellino, closed the championship in second position behind Salernitana, returning to Serie A more than thirty years after the last appearance in that category. In view of the 1998-1999 Serie A tournament, Venezia came to the meeting with many questions: some promising novelties such as the young Bilica and Volpi were hidden in pink, alternating with large departmental gaps. He immediately gave a great boost to the new Paduan Filippo Maniero, taken from Milan by Zaccheroni; the goals of the new winger made the gaps breathe, even as the team struggled to reach the bottom of the standings throughout the first round. However, in the second stage of the return, they also found the support of the Uruguayan ghost Álvaro Recoba, who had been loaned out by the patron Moratti's court, and Venice began to combine the game and the results. The nets of the coupled Recoba-Maniero (23 overall at the end of the season) led the lagoons to an unsuspected salvation: at the end of the tournament, the lagoons obtained an eleventh place in the standings, four lengths from Inter.

Despite the following year, some departments were strengthened, with the arrival of the goalkeeper Konsel, the defender Bettarini, the midfielders Berg and Nanami and the predictions Borgobello and Petkovic, Venice relented: with Recoba he returned to Inter and one less rose. Convincing compared to last season, the Lagunas capitulated closing the year in third place in the standings, with just 26 points and many regrets. Making the season less bitter were the exploits of Pippo Maniero (who introduced Fiorentina and Milan) and young Brazilian defender Fábio Bilica, who during Milan's impromptu goalkeeper's bitter game forced the expulsion of the orange and brown winger defender. also neutralizing a penalty on Ukrainian bomber Andriy Shevchenko. Despite the disappointing championship, it is worth noting the semifinal reached in the Italian Cup.

2000s

It started again from Serie B in the 2000-01 season, which under pressure from President Zamparini, was led by Cesare Prandelli, a coach who had led Verona to salvation just a few months before. Venice was back in the top flight after just one year of relegation to Serie B.

Cesare Prandelli, coach of the promotion obtained at the end of the 2000-01 Serie B championship. However, the following season has a different result than in 98-99: an aimless Venezia, led by three different coaches during the course of the season, had a season to forget, with a final verdict if possible, even worse than in 2000: last place, with only 18 points.

2015-Present

On October 6, 2015, the president of the new club, who had been temporarily hired by Daniels, New York lawyer Joe Tacopina, simply resigned from the Bologna summits and became the majority shareholder of the club. arancioneroverde club, which was refounded. The team, led first by Paolo Favaretto and then by Giancarlo Favarin, was authorized to start in Group C of Serie D: after an initial struggle by Campodarsego, which continued throughout the first round, the victory in the match played on 28 February 2016 against Penzo, launched the "new" Venezia alone at the top of the ranking. On April 24, a 3-3 draw against Unión Ripa La Fenadora marked the victory of the group and the promotion of the arancioneroverdi with two games to play at the end of the regular season. During the season, the team scored more than 100 goals, becoming the most prolific attack of all the teams between Serie A and Serie D.

On the eve of the 2016-2017 championship, the entity decided to simplify the name to Venezia Football Club and decided to entrust the position of coach to Filippo Inzaghi. Framed in Group B of Lega Pro, a strong group of experienced players in higher categories such as Alexandre Geijo, Maurizio Domizzi, Simone Bentivoglio and Agostino Garofalo was formed, the team presented itself from the first days as a candidate for promotion: after taking top position at the end of the first round, Venezia managed to gradually break away from their pursuers (Parma, Padova and Pordenone) and finally mathematically secure the victory of their group with three games to play for the end of the regular season, thanks to the home draw for 1-1 obtained on April 15, 2017 against Fano. Therefore, Venezia reconquered Serie B after 12 years of absence. The team closed the season with the best defense in the group (only 29 goals conceded) and the second best attack, scoring up to 16 players; The best scorers of the season for the Lagunari were Stefano Moreo and Alexandre Geijo, who both close the season with 10 goals. After 4 seasons in the second division, the team rose in the Serie B play-off after winning Associazione Sportiva Cittadella 2-1 on aggregate and will play in Serie A where it was for the last time in the 2001-02 season.

The 2019-2020 season opens with renewed confidence and enthusiasm: Fabio Lupo is hired while the new coach is Alessio Dionisi. The squad is almost completely revolutionized with important acquisitions such as Mattia Aramu and Antonio Vacca. In the league, Venezia have difficulties at home, but away from home they are a steamroller; Record seven victories away from Penzo, including Perugia, Chievo, Spezia and Pisa. Ten days from the end, the tournament is interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the gaps in the play-out area; At the restart, on the threshold of summer, the team changes pace and ends up in eleventh place in the standings, showing a good game and one of the best defenses in the category.

At the end of the season, coach Dionisi accepts Empoli's offer; Paolo Zanetti is hired to replace him. At the same time, Joe Tacopina leaves the structure of the company, which undergoes a reorganization in the shareholding composition: the presidency is attributed to Duncan Niederauer. In the championship, the team is among the best teams, even fighting for direct promotion: the regular season ends in fifth place, with subsequent access to the play-offs. After eliminating Chievo in the preliminary and Lecce in the semifinals, Venice enters the final against their fellow citizens from Cittadella. Venezia win the away game 0-1, while the second leg at the Pier Luigi Penzo Stadium sees the opponents score quickly and then gain numerical superiority by virtue of a sent-off imposed on a Venezia player. Cittadella repeatedly tries to breach Venezia's defense, but to no avail; Finally, in the 3.er minute of discount after 90, Bocalón scored 1-1 in a counterattack, which led to promotion to Serie A for the Lagunari after 19 years of absence.

Infrastructure

Stadium

Venezia FC's current stadium, the Pierluigi Penzo, is the second oldest stadium in Italy (the oldest being the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa).

It is a multi-purpose stadium in Venice, Italy. It is the largest sports facility in Venice. The stadium first opened in 1913 and takes its name from the World War I pilot, Pierluigi Penzo.

Estadio Pier Luigi Penzo

Originally constructed of wood, the stadium was greatly improved with a main concrete deck in the 1920s and further improvements were made in subsequent decades. The record attendance of 26,000 was during a 1966 Serie A game against AC Milan.

On September 11, 1970, a tornado struck Venice, causing extensive damage to the stadium. Due to the club's decline, the stadium was partially restored, with the capacity reduced to just over 5,000. The club returned to Serie A in 1998 and additional makeshift stands were added, bringing the capacity to 13,400, but it has since been reduced again to the current capacity of 7,450.

In July 2018 the club unveiled plans for a new 18,000-seat stadium to replace the Pierluigi Penzo Stadium. The new stadium will be built in the Quadrante di Tessera area, 12 km from Venice and will be entirely privately financed at a cost of €185 million, with the ability to expand to a 25,000-seat capacity.

Sports facilities

Both the first team and the youngsters train at the Taliercio Sports Center, located next to the homonymous sports hall in Mestre, in Cavergnago. Equipped with 6 training fields and a youth cage, the main camp has a grandstand capable of holding 300 spectators.

Coaches

Cesare Prandelli, with the Italian selection in the Euro 2012.

Among the internationally recognized coaches who led the club are:

Cesare Prandelli: he took office in 2000 with Venezia in Serie B. That season he achieved promotion to the highest category of Italian football, occupying fourth position with 69 points, just four points behind leader. In that season he achieved 19 victories in the 38 games. In the following season, in Serie A, the start would be disastrous. In the first five games he did not achieve any points, only two goals for and eleven against. After only those five games, Cesare was fired.

He played a total of 43 games between 2000 and 2001, with 19 victories and a 44.19% effectiveness rate. Years later he would be the coach of the Italian soccer team between the years 2010-2014.

Luciano Spalletti: His time with the team was in 1999 when he played in Serie A, but he had a poor performance. He took office in July 1999 and would be fired a few months later, in October, due to poor results. He only managed one win in 8 games. A strange event also occurred, just 27 days after being fired he would be rehired by Giuseppe Materazzi (president of the club, who had fired him). After returning to command of the team, he played another 8 games and then was fired again in February 2000. In his second stage he won three of the 8 games played. After that season he would go down to Serie B and then go up again with Cesare Prandelli.

In total he played 16 games with an effectiveness of 31.25%. He would later continue his career in teams like AS Roma, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Inter Milan and Napoli, among others.

Rivalries

Hellas Verona

This is one of the most heartfelt regional derbies in Italy, with 85 precedents dating back to 1910, the year the two teams first met.

The first two matches were won by the Scaligeri who won 1-0 in the first leg and 2-0 in the second leg. Venezia's first victory came in the following championship, at the end of a close game that ended 3-2 in favor of Venezia.

Of the 85 official matches, most have been played in Serie B (58), in fact this derby has only been held 4 times in the highest category, 12 when it was called the First Category, 2 in the Serie C-1, First Division, in the Alto Italia Championship and in the National Division, only once in the Italian Cup, in 1964. The only double tie between the two teams was played in 1934, with Vicenza also playing in a triangular shape to avoid relegation in C.

Calcio Padova

Another derby for both teams, there is a strong rivalry that has continued over the years. The first official meeting between the two cities was played in 1910 and saw Venezia win 4-1 in the first leg and 1-0 in the second leg in Padua (the victory was given on a table), Padova's first victory came in 1919 with a 3-1 away from home. It was played for the first time in Serie A in the 1949-50 season. The last meetings took place in the 2016-17 Lega Pro championship with matches that ended with away victories in both cases (Padua won Venice 3-1 and Venice won Padua 1-0). They have also played 6 matches in the senior Italian Cup and 5 in the Coppa dei Semiprofessionisti.
