Urticaceae is a family of plants belonging to the order Rosales.

Features

They are annual or perennial herbaceous plants, rarely woody (in the tropics), frequently with stinging hairs (cystoliths). Latex free. Leaves simple, opposite or alternate, often stipulated. Inconspicuous flowers (greenish), generally unisexual, monoecious or dioecious, monochlamydeous, tetramerous or pentameric; gynoecium superior, unicarpellate (one stigma), with one ovule; gathered in axillary inflorescences in panicles, cymes or catkins. Fruit in an achene or nut, about 550 species, typical mainly of warm regions.[citation required]
