UNSA Monumental Stadium
The Estadio Monumental de la UNSA, also known as the Estadio Monumental Virgen de Chapi, is a Peruvian multi-purpose stadium located in the city of Arequipa. It was founded on July 30, 1995 and has a capacity of 60,370 spectators. It is the largest stadium in Arequipa and the second largest in Peru after the Estadio Monumental de la U in Lima. It belongs to the National University of San Agustín.
This stadium is similar to the National Stadium, since it has the same number of stands in the popular ones. The final of the 2003 South American Cup was played in this venue, where Cienciano del Cusco was crowned South American champion after beating River Plate of Argentina with a score of 1-0. Also the first phase matches of the Cup America 2004.
In 2011 it was the main stage of the South American U-20 tournament that took place in southern Peru (in the cities of Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna). In it the largest number of matches were played, as well as the final phase in its entirety. The championship offered four spots for the 2011 U-20 World Cup held in Colombia. It should be noted that this was the championship where the star of Paris Saint Germain, Neymar rose to fame.
In 2015, it was the scene of the final of the 2015 decentralized tournament, between Melgar and Sporting Cristal, the local team prevailed by 3 goals to 2 over the visitor, thus achieving their second title in history and the first title national tournament to be held at this stadium.
In 2016, the sports publishing platform Sphera Sports presents a list of stadiums with wonderful surroundings, which includes the UNSA Monumental Stadium for its surroundings, for having a privileged view from one of its funds, where you can appreciate the imposing Volcano Misti. In May 2021, the Zona Bogotá DC tourism blog selected different stadiums in the world to learn about and cataloged the Monumental de la UNSA as one of the great soccer stadiums in the world.
History
Its construction began in 1991 and much of the financing was given thanks to blackmail by the National University of San Agustín to the Southern company with the threat of publishing the studies of the contamination that the company caused in Ilo. The first stage opened on November 11, 1993. 29,766 spectators were counted that day, however it was reported that many tickets were forged.
The second stage was inaugurated on July 30, 1995. That day the first official professional soccer match was also played, with Melgar from Arequipa facing Alianza Lima. The match ended 1-1 and the goals were scored by Waldir Sáenz at 10 minutes for Alianza, and Jorge Lazo for the locals at 28 minutes into the second half. Also in 1998 FBC Melgar faced LDU of Ecuador in this stadium for the Conmebol Cup, in front of a full stadium with a lot of bars. Unfortunately the Arequipeño team fell 3 to 1.

Between 2007 and 2008 it was used in some night games for Melgar. In 2009 the team decided that this venue would be its main stage until today.
It is also used for other activities such as the Cachimbo Olympics at the university, the Inauguration of the ADECOA School Games, concerts, etc. And it hosted some matches of Sportivo Huracán and Aurora in the Peru Cup.
