University of Chicago
The University of Chicago (in English: The University of Chicago) is a private university located in Chicago, Illinois (United States).. It was founded in 1890 by John D. Rockefeller and its main campus is in the Hyde Park neighborhood. It is one of the most prestigious universities in the United States and in the world, where numerous outstanding students, researchers, and academics have been educated, recognized for their notable contributions in various branches of science. The University of Chicago is consistently ranked among the top ten American and world universities in most rankings.
The university's business school, the Booth School of Business, has been ranked the best business school in the world by Business Week since 2006 to the present. The school is also considered the best in the world by the ranking of the British magazine The Economist 2012.
Among the professors, researchers and students of the University there have been 91 Nobel laureates and 50 MacArthur fellows.
Administration and financial aspects
The university is governed by a board of trustees. The board of trustees oversees the development and long-term plans of the university and manages fundraising efforts, and is composed of 55 members, including the president of the university. Directly under the president are the chancellor, fourteen vice presidents (including the chief financial officer, chief investment officer, and vice president of campus life and student services), the directors of Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab, the university secretary, and the student ombudsperson. The current Chairman of the Board of Directors is Joseph Neubauer; in May 2022, the new president will be David Rubenstein. The current provost is Ka Yee Christina Lee, who took office in February 2020 after the previous provost, Daniel Diermeier, stepped down to become chancellor from Vanderbilt University. The current president of the University of Chicago is chemist Paul Alivisatos, who took office on September 1, 2021. Robert Zimmer, the previous president, moved into the new role of chancellor of the university.
The university's endowment was the 12th largest among U.S. educational institutions and state university systems in 2013, and by 2020 was valued at $10 billion. Since 2016, the university's board of trustees has been resisted pressure from students and faculty to divest from fossil fuel companies. Part of former university president Zimmer's financial plan was to increase the build-up of debt to finance large construction projects,, which elicited both support and criticism from many members of the university community.[citation required]
