History

Flag of the University of Carabo

The University was created by presidential decree of October 11, 1833 by the then head of state José Antonio Páez, under the name of Colegio Nacional de Valencia and is characterized for being the first higher education center created in this way. Even so, it was not until July 5, 1836 when it began to function properly in the former headquarters of the San Antonio de Padua Hospital in the so-called Casa de La Estrella.

By 1840 Philosophy began to be taught and twelve years later (1852) Medical, Political, Ecclesiastical, Philosophical and Mathematics Sciences, granting the bachelor's degree and changing the name of the institution to Colegio de Estudios Superiores.

Economic and political difficulties caused the College to be closed until October 3, 1874, when Antonio Guzmán Blanco opened it again.

In 1883, General Antonio Guzmán Blanco elevated the College of Higher Studies to a First Category Federal College, having Dr. Julián Viso as rector and counting at that time with about 100 students. It was integrated by the following specialties: Philosophy, Exact Sciences, Political Sciences and Medical Sciences. Because of the elevation of rank, the old San Francisco Convent is subject to various modifications to become the new headquarters of the Federal College, being built an upper floor and the original roof level disappearing.

After Dr. Zuloaga, Dr. Alejo Machado served as Rector, who remained in office until 1904, the date on which the University was closed by Decree of General Cipriano Castro. On March 12, 1915, the Constitutional President of Carabobo State, Emilio Fernández, issued a Decree creating the Official Institute of Political Sciences that would bear the name of Miguel José Sanz, founder of the first College of Lawyers of Venezuela. In said institute they would study all the subjects that would allow them to qualify for the title of lawyer and solicitor. The director of this center would be Dr. Alejo Zuloaga.
