Unity Bridge (Monterrey)
The Unity Viaduct Bridge; Also called “Puente de la Unidad” and “Puente Atirantado”, it is a bridge that crosses the Santa Catarina River connecting the city of Monterrey and San Pedro Garza García in Nuevo León, Mexico. It is part of the “Unity Circuit”, which consists of the interconnection of a series of avenues.
History
It was inaugurated in 2003 surrounded by controversy, since the river it crosses is dry almost all year round and the cost of constructing the 4 lanes of the cable-stayed bridge was the same as for the construction of a conventional six-lane bridge., it is also argued that the bridge would result in relatively few beneficiaries, compared to the spending for a rapid transit system in Monterrey.
Hurricane Alex (2010)
On July 1, 2010, an unusual event was recorded in Monterrey, although periodic in its occurrence. Given the rainfall from Hurricane Alex, the Santa Catarina River filled its entire channel, causing damage to a large part of the roads built in its path. Only the Puente de la Unidad could withstand the onslaught and was the only bridge enabled during the mishap, since it only suffered collapse on the road leading to it. Both its structure and its piles did not suffer significant damage.
Other bridges in the metropolitan area suffered enormous damage, including the Revolución Bridge, which had to be reinforced; The Guadalupe Bridge (rebuilt in previous years due to Hurricane Emily) saw its entire lower part destroyed, and the two passes adjacent to the Viaduct (Santa Bárbara and Corregidora) were completely destroyed.
