The so-called Bioterrorism Law issued by the Federal Government of the United States, arises as a consequence of the attacks that country suffered on September 11, 2001 and its purpose is to prevent the entry of food that could be contaminated. This law entered into force on December 12, 2003 and is enforced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Customs.

The requirements imposed by this law affect exports from many countries to the United States of America, even without exporters adequately prepared to meet such requirements, applicable to food supplies, dietary supplements, fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, fish and shellfish, beverages, liquors, live animals to be processed as food and animal feed.
