The Unitary Democratic Coalition (CDU, Coligação Democrástica Unitária in Portuguese) is a coalition of left-wing political forces in Portugal, formed by the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) and the Ecologist Party "The Greens" (PEV), normally including members of the Democratic Intervention (ID) association in their electoral lists.

Its symbol consists of two squares: in the left square is the hammer and sickle in red; a white five-pointed star outlined in red (PCP symbol); on white background. On the other hand, in the right square there is a sunflower with yellow petals and a brown center (symbol of the PEV) on a white background.

The CDU was formed in 1987, with the name "Coligação Democrástica Unitária" and the acronym CDU, heir to the United People's Alliance (APU), the previous electoral platform of the Portuguese communists, which was dissolved due to differences that arose between the parties that formed it.

Municipal policy

The CDU has some influence in Portuguese politics at the municipal level. In fact, in the districts of Beja and Setúbal it has almost all the mayor's offices. It also has a lot of representation and even some mayorships in the districts of Évora, Portalegre, Lisboa, Santarém and Leiría.
