Union of European Basketball Leagues
The Union of European Basketball Leagues (ULEB) is a European organization founded in 1991 with the aim of contributing to the development of professionalism in national men's club basketball competitions through the cooperation of the currently 16 associate members. The will of the ULEB is to coordinate its mission with the respective national and international federations (which it makes responsible for non-professional basketball) in those aspects that affect professionalism, especially as far as tournaments are concerned.
The union currently chaired by Tomas van den Spiegel organized the Euroleague from its inception in 2000 until 2009, and the Eurocup from its creation, in 2002, also until 2009. Currently both competitions are run by Euroleague Commercial Assets (RCT).
Taking advantage of the 1991 Eurobasket dispute, representatives of the ACB (Spain), the Lega (Italy) and the LNB (France) met in Rome on June 25, 1991, founded ULEB as an opinion group and interlocutor with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and appointed the then top leader of the Italian League, Gianluigi Porelli, who was succeeded in 1998 Eduardo Portela.
The HEBA (Greece) joined in 1996 during Porelli's tenure. Now under the tutelage of Portela, who was elected president in Paris on March 18, 1998, the rest of the current members have been incorporated: BLB (Belgium), BBL (England) and LNBA (Switzerland), in December 1999; BBL (Germany), FEB (Netherlands) and PLK (Poland), in October 2001; Adriatic League (representing clubs from the former Yugoslavia), in February 2002; ÖBL (Austria), in October 2002; LKL (Lithuania), in June 2003; ALK (Czech Republic) in January 2004, BSL (Israel) in July 2005 and PBL (Russia) in May 2011.
