Unesco classification

The Unesco classification (Unesco International Nomenclature for the fields of Science and Technology), created by said body, is a knowledge classification system widely used in the organization of research projects and doctoral theses.

The sections are differentiated by levels according to the level of detail in fields, disciplines and subdisciplines, which are coded with two, four and six digits respectively.

  • Fields (two digits): are the most general sections. Each includes several different disciplines, but with common characteristics.
  • Disciplines (four digits): they represent a general description of groups of specialties.
  • Subdisciplinary (six digits): they represent the activities carried out within a discipline.
