Ukrainian flag
The Ukrainian flag is described in Article 20 of the Constitution and is made up of two horizontal stripes of equal size, blue on the top and yellow on the bottom. It was adopted on January 28 of 1992. The blue and yellow insignia was used for the first time during the Revolution of 1848 and had official status for a short period, from November 12, 1918. Its proportions are 2:3.
Various were the flags used by Ukraine at different periods throughout history. The first reference to the colors used in the national flag dates from the time of the Hetmans and was found in the Lviv chronicle of the 17th century. The coat of arms of the city of Lviv, in blue and yellow, is believed to have been bequeathed to the city by Prince Lev. The same colors appear on the coat of arms of the Ruthenians (a group of Ukrainians who lived in eastern Czechoslovakia and in the Carpathians) who, in the 14th and 15th centuries, were part of Poland. In the descriptions of military flags that were made in the times of the Hetmans (after the Periaslav Council of 1654) sky blue was already mentioned as the color of the flag. It carried different emblems and slogans. In addition to blue and yellow, another of the colors used by the Cossack State was red.
The heraldic origin of the colors of the national flag has been lost. Thus, the blue color came to represent the sky, while the yellow did the same with the wheat fields. On March 22, 1918, the Central Council of Ukraine adopted the blue and yellow flag and the trident as national symbols. The same was done by the government of the Western Ukrainian National Republic on November 12, 1918.
