The
UEFA Intertoto Cup (in English: UEFA Intertoto Cup) was an official international football competition organized by the European Union of Football Associations. Soccer (UEFA) for European clubs that had not qualified to play continental tournaments. It was qualifying for the UEFA Cup and there were several champions in each edition. Its antecedents date back to 1961 with the International Soccer Cup or Karl Rappan Piano Cup, as an initiative to fill the calendar in summer. In 1995, UEFA decided to restructure it into an independent qualifying tournament for the UEFA Cup until its demise in 2008.
Teams entered the tournament based on their ranking in their respective national leagues immediately behind those entering the UEFA Cup or Europa League. After his disappearance, these quotas were directly integrated into the qualifying phase of the Europa League.
The most successful clubs in the competition are, with two titles, Hamburger, Villarreal, Stuttgart, Schalke 04, followed with one by the Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise, Olympique de Marseille, Karlsruher, Lens or Aston Villa.
History
The Intertoto Cup replaced the International Football Cup (IFC), which was a competition organized by the Central European football federations to provide matches for their teams during the summer months. This existed from 1962 to 1967 and, in that year, the format was changed. The group stage prevailed over the knockout rounds, which were scrapped. This is how this competition without a trophy was born. In 1995 UEFA took over its organization and opened it to clubs from all over Europe. The championship did not have a single champion, but there was a set number of finals and their winners entered the following season of the UEFA Cup. This made the competition attractive to many clubs, who saw it as their only chance to qualify for international tournaments.
Competition system
Until 2006, the Intertoto Cup consisted of three preliminary rounds, a semifinal and a final. In the first three rounds, the teams were entered according to the position in their league and the country they represented. Once the 3 rounds were over, came the semifinals, played by twelve teams, and finally the three finals, from which the 3 teams that participated in the next edition of the UEFA Europa League came out.
In the 2006 season, the Intertoto Cup changed its format: it was reduced to three double-round rounds and the number of teams that were proclaimed Intertoto Cup champions and qualified for the Europa League increased to eleven, although starting in the second previous round. Among these champions of the competition, those who went the furthest in the UEFA Cup were awarded the Intertoto Cup trophy.
On November 30, 2007, the UEFA Executive Committee decided to dispense with the Intertoto Cup with the change in competition format of the UEFA Cup applicable from the 2009-10 season. Thus, in the summer of 2008 the last edition of the Intertoto Cup was held.
