UAE Team Emirates
UAE Team Emirates (UCI code: UAD) is a professional cycling team from the United Arab Emirates in the UCI WorldTeam category. of cycling teams). He participates in the UCI WorldTour as well as in some races on the Continental Circuit, mainly those of the UCI Europe Tour.
As of 2017 the team is renamed UAE Abu Dhabi after securing the backing of Abu Dhabi to secure sufficient funds to have the team in the top flight. For months before, the team had faced an uncertain future after Chinese company TJ Sport pulled out of a sponsorship deal, meaning the team's WorldTour license was listed as &# 34;under review" when the UCI issued licenses to other teams in November. However, the team's future has now been secured by a sponsor from Abu Dhabi, winning the UCI's endorsement with a top-tier UCI ProTeam license for 2017. That means a Name change to United Arab Emirates Abu Dhabi, under country of registration in the United Arab Emirates.
History of the team
Early Years
The team was founded in 1990 under the sponsor “Diana”. "Colnago" takes over from Diana in 1991, and finally "Lampre" from 1993. It has had several co-sponsors during this time, such as Daikin or Fondital.
During the years 1997 and 1998 the team temporarily disappeared with what, because of that break, is no longer the longest-running professional team.
With the disappearance of the Saeco at the end of 2004, the team received a large part of this formation for its debut in the UCI ProTour in 2005. Thus, Damiano Cunego and Gilberto Simoni, among others, joined the team.
2007
In 2007 he achieved a total of 31 victories. Alessandro Ballan won the Tour of Flanders in the spring, a classic considered one of the five monuments of cycling. In the Giro d'Italia the team achieved two stage victories, one each for Daniele Bennati and Marzio Bruseghin.
In the Tour de France Bennati achieved two stage victories. Soon after Ballan won the Vattenfall Cyclassics in Hamburg.
In the Vuelta a España, Bennati completed a great season by achieving three stage victories, thus achieving victories in all three Grand Tours.
The season concluded with the victory of Damiano Cunego in the Giro di Lombardia, winning for the second time in his career in the classic of the dead leaves, also a monument of cycling and considered the last great race of the season.
2008
In 2008, the team had a turbulent start to the year, due to a CONI anti-doping control carried out by surprise on the night of January 28, when the team was carrying out its usual pre-season training camp in San Vincenzo, a coastal town from Italian Tuscany. After a 215 km training day, seven cyclists decided at the last minute to go out for dinner at a restaurant (which could imply sanctions as their whereabouts had not been notified in advance), returning to the concentration hotel at 11:00 p.m. Finally, all the requested team cyclists passed the anti-doping control, which lasted until 03:30 in the morning. The control was controversial because it was carried out outside the hours recognized by the AMA (from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.); while WADA considers that carrying out controls outside of those hours in preseason does not provide any advantage to detect doping, the CONI anti-doping prosecutor Ettore Torri believed that it did. Alessandro Ballan asked to go to the CONI headquarters to clarify what had happened. Patxi Vila denounced that the inspectors had not identified themselves, which was in breach of the regulations, and the cyclists received the support of the Association of Italian Professional Cyclists (ACCPI). Vila tested positive for testosterone in a doping control carried out shortly thereafter, on March 3.
In spring Damiano Cunego won a stage of the Tour of the Basque Country, and two days after said victory (the day after the Basque round ended) he won the Klasika Primavera, beating Alejandro Valverde in the sprint. Cunego completed his good first part of the season by winning the prestigious Amstel Gold Race classic, the first of three Ardennes classics.
Marzio Bruseghin was 3rd in the general classification of the Giro d'Italia, for which he was on the podium in Milan, in an Italian round in which he also won a stage. Cunego, a mainstay of Lampre, had given up running that year the Giro to be able to better prepare for the Tour de France, although he obtained some discreet results in the French test.
In the Vuelta a España, Ballan won the stage that ended at the Alto de La Rabassa. Cunego, for his part, could not be among the overall favourites.
In the World Cup held in Varese, Ballan was proclaimed Road Cycling World Champion, winning the gold medal and the Rainbow jersey, wearing the colors of the Italian team; Cunego was second, thus achieving a historic double for Italy, and also for Lampre, a team in which both play.
Damiano Cunego won the Giro di Lombardy in October, the last of the great races of the cycling season, thus obtaining another victory for his team and winning the classic for the third time. Cunego finished second in the UCI ProTour classification of that year.
2010: Extra-sports problems
Financial problems
After problems to finalize his UCI ProTour license at the beginning of the year, due to some issues in the guarantees of the team, the UCI granted a provisional license until March 31, 2010, the date on which the situation of the team would be reviewed again, and a decision would be made. Finally, the UCI granted Lampre-Farnese the definitive Pro Tour license on April 1, 2010.
Investigation for doping of some runners
After an investigation opened by the Italian police in March 2010 against doping in Italy, the homes of Alessandro Petacchi and Lorenzo Bernucci were searched, finding "clean" the first, and finding some substances in the second, which he claimed were used by his sister. Bernucci was removed from the team while the investigation continued. There were some riders from the current team, and others who had left Lampre this year, such as Ballan or Santambrogio, both with the BMC Racing Team. The two riders were initially removed from the team, pending the investigation, but due to the lack of evidence, both riders returned to normal activity in their team, just as suspicions about the riders currently at Lampre-Farnese seem to fade away.
Victories in the Tour, Vuelta and UCI ProTour events
Lampre took stage victories in both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. Two in the French round, obtained by Alessandro Petacchi in addition to the green jersey (classification by points) and a stage in the Spanish round won by Petacchi as well. In addition, Damiano Cunego signed a second stage position in the Giro d'Italia and a third stage position in the Tour.
In addition, they achieved several victories in UCI ProTour races, such as a stage in the Tour of the Basque Country, obtained by Gavazzi, a stage and the general classification of the Tour de Romandie, after the disqualification of Valverde achieved by the young Simon Špilak, in Dauphiné Libéré with Grega Bole, in the Tour of Switzerland with Petacchi, or in the Tour of Poland with Lorenzetto.
2011
That year the Ukrainian company ISD entered as the second sponsor, bringing in numerous cyclists from that country (as happened with ISD-Neri). In addition, one of his co-sponsors, AMPO, which has already "helped" for the signing of Andréi Kashechkin to take shape last season, he demanded the signing of Aitor Pérez Arrieta.
2012
After an excellent role in the 2011 Giro d'Italia by Michele Scarponi, in which he managed to be 2nd behind Alberto Contador and later after his disqualification, being declared the winner, the team began 2012 with the objective to win the Giro, after a good performance by Alessandro Petacchi in the Tour Down Under, where he finished 2nd and 3rd in various stages. In the Settimana Coppi e Bartali, the young pearl of the team, Diego Ulissi scored a "double" winning the 3rd and 4th stages, Damiano Cunego also won the 2nd stage of the Giro del Trentino, and in May, Alessandro Petacchi was going to make his debut, winning the 1st and 3rd stages of the Return to Bavaria.
2014
Its main riders in 2014 are, like last year, Damiano Cunego winner of a Giro d'Italia, and the new riders for this season, the 2013 world road champion, the Portuguese Rui Costa and the American Chris Horner, winner of the Vuelta a España 2013.
2016
The main sponsor until 2016 was the company Lampre, dedicated to the steel industry, which gave the team its name since its creation. Throughout history the full name of the squad has changed depending on the co-sponsors, the last seasons being the Ukrainian metallurgical company ISD. From 2013 to 2016 the co-sponsor was the bicycle manufacturer Merida from Taiwan, calling the team Lampre-Merida.

The team remained in the UCI ProTour category.
