Plot
In the second half of the 19th century, the oceans and seas are no longer safe for navigation. Numerous ships have been lost, without a clear explanation. Many believe that it is a sea monster, a kind of whale with a large sharp horn on its forehead. Finally, an expedition is organized from the United States, whose mission will be to reveal the secret of these sinkings.
On board is a naturalist, Professor Aronnax (Paul Lukas), with his assistant Conseil (Peter Lorre). Also participating in the expedition is a skilled whaler named Ned Land (Kirk Douglas), who hopes to kill the beast. When, after a long navigation, they are finally attacked by the monster, the ship sinks and the few survivors are picked up by a ship unlike anything they could have imagined: the Nautilus submarine.
Inside the mysterious artifact they meet Captain Nemo (James Mason), who shows them the entire ship, where they are very well treated and informs them that those who enter the Nautilus never come out again, so he tells them Many secrets are revealed and they travel to various places, among which the mythical Atlantis is mentioned.
